[BUG REPORT FILED] radeon video doesn't work

Postby mrambo3501 » Apr 26th, '13, 14:14

I am testing mga3-RC on an HP dx5150. I can only get the video to work when using the generic VESA driver. When I try to use the "ATI Radeon HD 4870 and earlier" driver (which is where the configuration utility wants to default) testing returns "an error occurred no screens found try to change some parameters". If I just save the configuration and reboot X won't start at all and I have to revert to VESA from cli. Output of lspci -vv follows...

Just out of curiosity, what are you selecting for your monitor? Just the plug-n-play default?

Yes. Although I have tried manually setting a monitor once or twice just to see if it helps, at present it is set to the default plug-n-play.

Have you tried the Xorg -> ati driver, as opposed to the Vendor -> ATI -> Radeon drivers? Just wondering; I confess I'm stuck.

Xorg -> ati driver results in the same "no screens found" error as the "4870 and later" vendor driver. It doesn't matter what monitor is set up. I don't really know what to look for with regard to bug 8049. That looks different to me.

You do not have a Radeon HD card of any kind, you have a Radeon X200/X300. This card does not support opengl which any Radeon HD XXXX does, hence those options won't work. It is really old, like almost 10 yrs old. You may be stuck with the vesa driver. I would just shell out $30 for a new card.

That sounds entirely reasonable - you're probably correct. FWIW, when I do use one of these boxes for personal work I do put a card in them. I just picked this one up because it was available and I wanted to test the mga3 RC. What I found was that the default set up for the video doesn't work. I haven't tried it but it would seem at least possible that the same would be true for a live CD or any other variation. VESA may well be the only possible way to do video on this hardware but if that is the case the installer should default to it. Seems like this hardware needs to be blacklisted for the ATI drivers or something. I don't know how many of these are still in the wild but the school distrct I work for has nearly a thousand of them. Should this be a bug report?

Yes please report this issue https://wiki.mageia.org/en/How_to_report_a_bug_properly

edit: when filing the bug report please select Cauldron rather than 3 as we don't officially have a 3 yet :)

VoodooDali, it looks like I was incorrect in that the Radeon X#### chipsets do in fact support opengl, they just need an ancient catalyst drivers available here. If these don't work though, I suspect your out of luck.

According to the latest Mageia 3 Errata, under Hardware Issues, "AMD dropped support of Radeon HD 2000/3000/4000 in Catalyst"
Source: https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Mageia_3_Errata

So it's either VESA, old version of Catalyst, or a new card, whichever is less painful. Best of luck either way.

Yep. This is older hardware that is no longer all that well supported. At this point the one thing I think still needs to happen is for mga to use a VESA configuration as default for these cards instead of a known to be broken ATI driver. There is a bug open which will hopefully get that done. For mga to default to a setup which doesn't (can't) work isn't very helpful. I'll mark this solved though since it is apparently a known driver problem that is the culprit.
