[SOLVED] Touchpad driver issue

Postby beeswax » Apr 28th, '13, 18:14

First off, this is my first post here at Mageia. I've heard a lot of good things about this distribution and thought I'd give the latest RC a shot. So far it's been a pleasant experience via live usb key. Everything just works. However, I decided to install Mageia 3 RC on a spare computer I keep around for testing out different Linux distributions and discovered that the touchpad no longer works after installation. The touchpad works just fine on Live USB though. Interestingly enough, in both Live and Installed, the touchpad drivers shows up correctly as CyPS/2, since this is a Cypress touchpad. The Live USB already had touchpad drivers installed and confgured correctly. The installed version however, does not. I then decided to install Synaptiks. I then went into Input Devices to set up my touchpad, but when I click it I get a "No touchpad installed" error dialog. Yet if I go to the Drivers section in MCC, it correctly recognizes that I have a CyPS/2 driver.

I'd appreciate any help on this matter. Perhaps I just need to edit something in config files somewhere, but I'm not sure where?

Thanks. :)

As the non live version is installing only free driver,
you should enable the 'non free' repository,
then install all the packages MCC-hardware suggests to you for your hardware

Thanks for the prompt reply, tom_. I should've mentioned that I did enable that repo after a fresh install. First thing I do whenever I install a new distro is update/upgrade and configure repos. But I'll go back and double-check this to be certain and get back to you. Right now I'm typing this from within the Live USB version.

Double-checked to make sure I enabled non-free repo and it was enabled. I then proceeded to install the kcm_touchpad driver instead which is the free driver the live version is using, I assume? At least now kcm doesn't spit an error message like synaptiks does. However, kcm doesn't allow me to configure the touchpad. It's grayed out. I can see all the tabs and details which looks exactly like the live session, but not able to configure it. I'll keep trying. Feels like I'm getting closer. ;)

Ta da! Solved it.:D

I had to install x11-driver-input-synaptics. Now whenever I go to Input Devices in System Settings, both kcm and synaptiks touchpad configuration tools are accessible. Yay! :D

I'm glad you solved your trouble :-)

however the program at "MCC->hardware->browse and configure hardware"
should have installed that package... if not, it is a bug and it would be nice fix it

Have you to run that program or no?

Hi tom_,

Before I solved this problem, I did run browse and configure hardware but it didn't fix it. Like I said, it did recognize the touchpad correctly as being a CyPS/2, which was why it baffled me at first. If it's an MCC bug, how would I go about filing it? Feel free to file it if you want?
