Since I sorted of drifted off topic with this (to my grub2 issue) should I mark it solved for the log in screen issue? After I replaced the various dbus packages with the helpful commands offered previously in this thread I was able to use the SYSTEM SETTINGS that had previously failed.

Well, probably best to adjust the thread title to something more meaningful and mark it either [SOLVED] or [DONE]

I do still have the issue with grub2 and also a related (maybe?) problem with the X-31 not shutting down when told to do so.

When told to shut down, if I hit the ESC button so that I see the command lines scroll by, I see the commands from the start up boot cycle when I started the laptop and the computer just sits there and the cursor blinks. I have to use the power button to shut it off. Where can I look for help with this? Or should I do a clean re-install to see if this will not happen again?

Probably. And apart from that, please start a separate thread for that, thanks ;)
