[SOLVED] Cannot open files on second hdd (Mageia 3 Beta 2 -)

Hello!
Today I installed my first Mageia.
And so far I am happy. But with a lot of questions ...

Behind me is the intensive use of: Linux Mint 12, Ubuntu 9.04 - 12.04, Fedora 17 and, longer ago, SuSe. I came to Mageia in the hope of a better privacy policy.

Nevertheless I have a first problem: I cannot access my backup-files which are on a second HDD (SATA). Whenever I try as root (or not) to access them I have this red big message on top of dolphin: "Folder ....xyz ... no right to open folder" (in German).

My non-technic-instinct tells me that I should now be GOD because root is not enough?

Maybe what I need is a possibility to set chmod 777 to all folders and files on that data storage HDD? But how?

Well you have your wish. It is so private you cannot read it yourself.

If there is an fstab entry for this hdd, then it will be mounted at boot time and will be owned by root.

If it is a Linux style file system then you will only be able to access the files on it as your user if the UID/GID numbers on the files match your user, or a group of which your user is a member.

If it is a vfat partition which has no concept of ownership, then you will have to use the 'umask=0' mount option which has precisely the effect you desire. It makes all the files on the partition appear to have 777 attributes. Either edit the fstab entry to add the option umask=0 or use the MageiaControlCentre>LocalDisks>HardDrive Advanced settings to enable the umask=0 option.

Alternatively set the 'noauto' and 'user' mount options and the drive will no longer be mounted at boot time, and can be mounted by the user in which case the files on it will be owned by the user.

Root user should be able to do anything to any file. How are you trying to access it as root?

It's Linux-ext4-file-format. And I only want to access it one time from Mageia. Just to copy my backupfiles one time. Is there really no "chmod 777 to all files and folders in this mainfolder - command" ?

Well yes, there surely is.
But what irritates me: on one hand, you pay extreme attention to your privacy and stuff,
but on the other hand you don't even want to diagnose this, instead just do the brute-force method "give all access to everybody" ... ?

Thank you! That's what I was indeed looking for.

And, in fact, I thought, that this very hdd will only be used once and gets unmounted after (every daily) usage and kept in a secure place, will not be a danger in terms of privacy. Is that wrong?
Well, yes, I have to find out the least affordable mode of chmode. It must and in fact, I shouldn't "777" it all.
