Problem with monitor resolution

Hi,

I run mageia2 on an asrock ion 330 (nvidia Ion chipset) with compiz enabled. All works well. Nevertheless the default resolution in KDE settings (System settings -> size and orientation) is no good on my 19' monitor, it looks more like a 800x600 crap resolution. I change it in the KDE settings to 1280x1024 which is perfect for me. I apply the new settings and I end up with a nice resolution.

The problem is that when I log out and log back in it reverts to the old default resolution and I have to change it again which is a pain.

Any suggestions are welcome,

You shouldn't need compiz, kde has it's own built in compositor. They could be conflicting. I'd try disabling compiz and test it.

Thanks for your quick reply but if I disable compiz I will lose the 3d desktop won't I? I really like my 3d desktop with the expo and scale options which enable me to move quickly from one dektop/window to another...

The same features are contained within KDE desktop effects, actually this implements a slightly smaller subset of compiz effects, but better integrated ...

I have disabled compiz and played a bit with the KDE desktop effects, I still have the problem that the resolution needs to be reset at each session. Any idea why?

Also does anyone know how to activate the equivalent of expo mode (compiz) in KDE? In compiz one can use the monitor edge and the mouse to quickly move from one virtual desktop to another.

Systemsettings --> Workspace Behavior --> Screen Edges --> Other Settings

Just a stupid question (or not). Is this CRT? I have one which lies about DDC data (especially about refresh frequency). So I need to set xorg.conf manually (PreferredMode and Modeline). I needed some trial and error but now it works like a charm.

Have you tried drakx11? ( MCC - Hardware - Graphical Server) If your monitor vendor/model is not listed perhaps one of the Generic resolution/sync rate options will work.

Yes I have tried the MCC / drakX11 it still doesn't stay for the next session.

You may want to look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log as it may contain hints why your resolution is not being kept.

I used Another Modeline Calculator for PreferredMode and Modeline in xorg.conf. As this monitor lies over DDC about it's abilities MCC or any linux tool that count's on that data can't use monitor's full potential. In other words: it flickers or is too small if I don't use custom Modeline.
