Wrong password with VNC

Hi,
I can't connect a VNC client on a VNC server. I tried many times, the error message is always the same "Wrong password". However, it worked once.
The both PCs are on the same lan, one with Mageia 1/KDE the other with Mageia 2 / KDE. I use KRDC and Krfb.
I am wondering if the problem could be due to the fact that I have a Qwertz keyboard (Switz) in one side and a Azerty one on the other side.
May be the only time it worked was because by chance the password needed the same keys on each keyboard. What do you think ?

the keyboard difference shouldn't matter, theoretically, but it may be the problem. Of course the way to test would be to use the same type on both sides as a test.

Now, which password are you trying to use? The user name on the remote? I recall when starting the VNC server I had to set a password that any clients would have to use. It's a VNC-only password not related to the user accounts. In fact one or other of the servers I used generated it's own password.

So I guess the question is what password are you using?

The password I am talking about is the one automatically given by the server that must be entered by the client.
I made a new test with Mageia 1 on the server and Mageia 3 beta 1 on the client. The error message given by the client is "VNC server closed connection" just before asking the password. At the same time, the server says: "Non invited connection accepted from « 192.168.0.1:57043 »"

Are your firewalls off on both machines? VNC has to negotiate random high ports for a control channel. I've found allowing the VNC service in the wizard in mcc often doesn't work. I've had to totally disable the firewalls.

It definitely looks like auth is failing and the server closes. Do you have another keyboard so you can have the same layout everywhere for a test? I am not sure where VNC hooks X, but the X server is actually the keyboard/mouse you are sitting at. The X client is on the remote machine you're trying to log in to. It may be the X client (the VNC server) is using the local keyboard layout, which is different from the one you're sitting at, using to log in. In that case no doubt the codes sent would be misinterpreted.

As I say, I'm not sure about where VNC hooks X, but I am positive about the X server being the keyboard you are using, your VNC server is actually the X client, not the X server. A difference in keyboard layout could rationally be the problem here.

Thanks a lot for your answers. It 's not easy to change a laptop keyboard, but I think I should be soon able to find two PC with the same keyboard.

they're both laptops? that would be tough to swap out.
