Huawei broadband modem asks for PIN

I am using a Huawei USB modem (EVDO, called Tata Photon+ in India) on Mageia, which seems to connect successfully, but internet doesn't work.
I connect using wvdial, and have tried both as a normal user and SU.

Upon looking into the network manager, i see a ppp connection, which pops up a window to enter a 4 digit PIN. I dont know what the pin is, and a blank pin does not work.

I know for sure that a pin is not required, because i was using the same modem with my Arch desktop earlier.

Can someone help?

i usualy just type 0000 when that happens

I have tried 0000, 1234, 1111... all to no avail
Will however try again when i'm home tonight.

I tried entering 0000 as password, but i get a message stating "please check if you have inserted the sim properly"
Internet still does not work.

I took a peek into resolv.conf, and i can see the dns entries (with a comment stating "ppp temp entry")
nslookup and dig dont work (i presume the package isn't installed). When i do a ping google.com, it throws 'unknown host google.com'.

Any ideas?

A SIM card can ask for a PIN, not a modem.
So you can put the SIM in a phone, disable the PIN request and put back the SIM in the modem

ignore dns for now

use another machine to find an ip out and use that directly.

then once you have established you can ping an ip, fix dns.

There is no separate SIM card.. i suppose the SIM is sorta hardwired into the modem.

173.194.38.142 belongs to google.
When i try to ping that, i get

from 14.97.164.156 icmp_seq=1 Destination Host Unreachable

14.97.164.156 is the IP that my laptop receives when i connect using wvdial.

don't you have it?

The box does have a 10 digit pin. But the prompt specifically asks for a 4 digit pin

e.g. comgt -d /dev/ttyUSB0 ... ttyUSB4 or whatever shows up with your modem?

I get the following:

[root@localhost ~ ]# comgt -d /dev/ttyUSB01
Can't open device /dev/ttyUSB01.
[root@localhost ~ ]# comgt -d /dev/ttyUSB02
Can't open device /dev/ttyUSB02.


Apart from that, did you try entering the 10digit pin?

I did try, i get back a message saying i should be entering 4 digits.
