Postby Justadude » Nov 26th, '12, 15:20

Hello everyone!
I am a student who is in an operative class atm and we just started with a project where we have to try out a distro of Linux.
I picked Mageia, however I don't know what you guys say about it, so far all I know is that its supposed to be stable and ...?
So, I am just wonder whats so awesome about Mageia that puts it ahead of other distros? Feel free to boast and brag all you like! I mean it! Seriously! What is it that makes it Awesome?

I am hoping to hear back from y'all!

See Presentation of Mageia for beginners

Other texts in portuguese, not yet translated into English:

Hi

To be honest there is only one way and that is to jump in, so try the live cd or go the whole hog and plug in a new drive and install complete.
If you have ever installed Windows from scatch and then a Linux O/S you will notice the difference

I guess one of the best things about the distro, apart from the distro itself, is the community. As Mageia is a community distro if you have any problems just do as you have already done and go to the forum and ask for info. Browse the forums and check for yourself

Kindest regards

Benmc

just an extra. Macxis' location is in Brazil, I'm in New Zealand, others are from Australia, Germany, Holland, England.... the list goes on, so really a global community.

Urpmi is great.
The Mageia control center is great. Really intuitive and easy and giving you full control of lots of really important things.
It's RPM but easier than Fedora.
Some nice touches: Celtx in the repos and Freetuxtv (I think). Really easy installation of Drupal and WordPress.

Downsides:
- I'm not a fan of KDE and think that when the flat and non-Aero Windows 8 becomes more commonplace, KDE will look terribly dated. You can use Gnome 3, which I did - but the look of the MCC doesn't quite suit it.
- For something whose name means "Magic" Mageia has quite a light and neutral feel. That you are even asking "What's so awesome about Mageia?" is indicative of the comparative weakness of its branding. Ok, hexagrams are clearly out but I'm convinced there's a way to make it feel slightly more magical. It's very slick right now - it just needs to be more enticing. Of course it is a community project but I still believe this is important if you want Mageia to survive in the long term.
- Oprhaned package handling.

Well, when you see the deficiencies of other popular package managers, say yum oder zypper, then you're glad when you can use urpmi again.
So i'd say the urpm* toolset is definitely awesome, not only for managing, but also for querying purposes.

What's awesome for me: I installed Mageia on 3 desktops - they work
1 server - it works (complete with ushare media server and virtual machines and central printer)
1 media center and it just works (with XBMC)
All different machines and all of them are running KDE, i love it. :P
