The New Thunderbird ESR

Postby onikage » Nov 26th, '12, 16:37

Beyond this mainstream Thunderbird release and as planned, we are releasing the second Thunderbird Extended Support Release (ESR) targeted at large organizations. This ESR version is not only a security and bugs fix, but it contains all the great features that have been added to Thunderbird since January 2012. Please download here.

Since Mageia is working with ESR mozilla releases I was hoping that we'd see the new Thunderbird ESR release that came out 5 days ago in the repositories, available for update.

I know I can always install it manually, but I'm still a noob and find it easier to use the software package manager to get all the little files where they belong.

(If you decide to update the repositories) Thanks in advance.

I think that the original intention, for Mageia 2, was to stay with ESR 10 until its EOL (which I believe is February 2013).

However, ESR 17 for Firefox is in testing, and so perhaps Thunderbird ESR 17 will follow soon.

I think since there is only a small overlapping time between ESR 10 and 17 (refering to the Firefox ESR page) and the support for ESR 10 will be dropped by Mozilla. There need to be a change to Firefox ESR 17 in Mageia 2 and also the linked bug report is filed against mga2... This will be true for Thunderbird as well (refering to Thunderbird lifecycle)

Firefox/Thunderbird 10ESR will be supported until February next year by Mozilla (19.February 2013). We'll switch only when this is definitive, and after thorough testing.
FWIW the ESR wiki pages at Mozilla are quite outdated, i'm referring to mails on the thunderbird-enterprise / mozilla-ewg mailing lists.
