Laptop hibernating not correct and not returning correctly

Postby ralgith » Nov 3rd, '12, 00:11

This may be two separate problems, however they happen together for me.

Case: My power jack on my laptop needs replacing, and sometimes the power cuts out for a brief moment here and there. When this happens, Mageia tells me my battery (which is fully charged) is at a critical level and immediately goes into hibernation procedures. Well crap! Sure my battery is old and the charge only lasts about 30 minutes these days, but when its fully charged it isn't critical! Ok, so... no big deal. I adjust the power cord a bit and get it powering the laptop again and press the power button. Everything seems fine, the computer boots right back to my desktop... but then thats when there are more issues. I can't interact with my desktop, and after about 60-90 seconds, my computer automatically shuts down. So, I reboot again. This is a normal reboot since the machine shuts down, not hibernates again. When I get to my desktop, I get errors about dbus not being running and have issues with the keyring.

Can anyone shed some light on the issue here and any possible work-arounds? I'd like to keep the hibernation for low power enabled, but I don't want it doing it when I have a full charge. My power settings for battery are: Don't suspend, and when critical hibernate. The battery meter seems to correctly detect my battery level. I'm using GNOME in the old style mode with Nautilus managing my deskop (though that doesn't seem to make a difference) and GDM.

So, its been 6 days and no responses here. I'm a little disappointed since this is a pretty big hang up for me and I'm a recent convert from Mandriva to Mageia, yet already considering a move to Fedora due to this and only this problem. C'mon guys, someone out there must have an idea.

Is this with Mageia 1 or Mageia 2, and is it a fresh installation or an upgrade from Mandriva?

This issue is still present, though I have now replaced the power plug inside the laptop so it is usable on the cord. Still doesn't let me switch to battery without this happening however, which renders Mageia 2 still an issue for me.

Maybe you should not have only replaced the jack, but the whole powerboard which is around the jack? This does not sound like anything that is solvable via software, but rather like a hardware issue with the power supply/battery, coming together on the power board.

Except that it is software since it works fine in Mandriva 2010.2, Windows XP, and Linux Mint (I think, I'd have to test that one again), and it only fails in Mageia.

What kernel version were you testing this with Mint? Maybe you just need to add some kernel option for ACPI/APIC, then?
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions#Common_Kernel_Options
Compare the output of
Code: Select all
cat /proc/cmdline
on Mint and Mageia and adjust accordingly. If you don't want to boot Mint
for that, you can also look in the grub configuration for Mint.

I am running Mandriva 2010.2 and Mint "Katya" (I forget version number) from LiveCDs - and they both work fine without extra boot options for ACPI and APIC. In fact, I was using Mandriva 2010.2 as my installed OS prior to installing Mageia 2 from scratch. I've been using Mandriva on this laptop with no sleep/hibernate issues since Mandriva 2008. So I'm stumped.

For reference, my Mageia /proc/cmdline is this:
BOOT_IMAGE=linux root=UUID=1d0ca513-a96e-4269-8bf1-5196263545d0 splash quiet resume=UUID=b64aab0c-17ab-490c-aae9-49b23b13bf27 vga=788

Which is what it should be - a basic cmdline. As for Mandriva 2010.2, its whatever the default cmdline is for the LiveCD (I'm not gonna reboot right now to see what that is since I'm working), so I would assume its essentially the same.
