Will I get gnome 3.8 when it is released in mageia 3

Postby vjjustin » Nov 16th, '12, 14:15

Are we going to update gnome versions within mageia 3 (like opensuse) or are we going to stick to just one version of gnome for one mageia version (like fedora)?
I really like to keep up to date with the gnome development. Just after mageia 3 is released, gnome 3.8 will be released. Will I have to wait till the next mageia version or update it after a short delay?

For stable releases, we stick to the same version of our software, unless one or more of the following applies:
there is a bug fix only release available
upstream no longer supports the current version
the software is bound to an online service and will only work with the latest version
https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Updates_policy#Version_Policy

Of course, you can consider using part of your Hard Disk to install cauldron and enjoy newer versions of our packages there 8-)
It is not advised to use cauldron for production, though.

Thats bad.

I guess gnome falls into this category. The last security update of 3.6 was 3.6.2 and is already out. No more official support from upstream. No need to say anything about the situation once 3.8 is released. They wont bother even with security updates. Is it a final decision about gnome? Any chance for a reconsideration?

I hope there will at least be some 3rd party repos etc.

If it falls into that category, it'll be valid to let Gnome 3.8 go into Mageia 3 updates, once it is released. The same is true for the other two categories in the short list I gave. Olav Vitters contributes to (upstream) Gnome and to Mageia, he won't miss the opportunity to get Gnome 3.8 into Mageia 3 if it is valid to do that.

I said we stick to the same version unless one or more of the three given reasons applied. Was that wrong English?

I am not quite sure about Gnome stopping support for 3.6.2 as soon as 3.8 is out. Moreso when it is true when I read these days that the compat mode will be no longer available in 3.8. Gnome will possibly risk to lose lots of users with such behavior. OTOH, Gnome never was afraid of losing users....

Actually Mar 06
GNOME 3.7.91 beta release occurs March 6
Mageia Release candidate March 12th

and the finals

GNOME 3.8.0 newstable release March 27
GNOME 3.8.1 newstable release April 17

With Mageia due April 2.

Seems like tight timing to get it in Would actually look like Mageia 4 would be aiming at gnome 3.12 so missing 3.8 and 3.10 entirely.

Well, version freeze is next week for Mageia 3 so seems highly unlikely at all.

Will there be any other repo with gnome 3.8 available once 3 is out? How do we keep gnome updated, if we are to miss both 3.8 and 3.10?

The intention is that Mageia 3 will have Gnome 3.8 RC when Mageia 3 is released and an update to 3.8 final will be provided after release of Mageia 3:

Gnome 3.8

Postby ethancello » Apr 1st, '13, 03:12

Gnome 3.8 has just come out and it includes a "classic mode" which would offer users a more traditional GTK interface. Will Gnome 3.8 be included with Mageia 3 or be available in the repositories?

Thanks.

Not at release time. Providing it as an update would require more people to get involved in packaging Gnome. IIRC there's just one person working on it and he does not seem to be able to spend much time on Mageia at present.
