Using Adblock 2.1.2, AdBlock Plus Popup Addon 0.4 and Element Hiding Helper for Adblock Plus 1.2.3 addons here,
together with Mageia firefox packages, never had any crash, be it under Mageia 1 or Mageia 2.

I've merged the two threads into one, as it's about the exact same problem, and adjusted the title of the initial thread.

@doktor5000:
Do you also have a 64bit installation?

Firefox even crashes when I click the Adblock Plus preferences button in the add-on tab...

rpm -qa | grep firefox-ext

No, in my case it definitely was not:
Code: Select all
# rpm -qa | grep firefox-ext

Nothing is in output.
I installed Adblock Plus 2.0.2 from the repo and it works OK. The one that caused crashes however, was 2.1.2 and its release was dated July 2012, so I think that the recent Firefox update triggered this problem.
Anyway, 2.0.2 works, but of course, will be updated only via repo.
And yes, once again, I am on a 64-bit system, this may be important...

The solution is indeed to remove the manually installed add-on and install the one from the repository.
It's a bit outdated, but at least it does not crash!

Nope, as already mentioned i'm using Adblock Plus 2.1.2, installed via Addon Manager, without any problem.
Also the addons from the repos will probably not receive any update, or at least in the past it was always lagging behind.

I had problems with firefox crashing and the "segmentation fault" message as well last weekend. The problem popped up while I was in the middle of doing a full update (a few hundred packages) on a fresh install, so I couldn't say if it was before or after firefox updated.

I would have had three plugins leftover in my ~/.mozilla folder from my previous install: Ad-Block Plus, Xmarks, and Moonlight. I deleted my ~/.mozilla folder completely (I didn't lose anything since my bookmarks are synced via xmarks) and that got rid of the segmentation fault until I tried installing the plugins again, but I'm not sure which one I had just installed when it crashed. Could have been any of the three, or just something flaky about the latest firefox update. Either way, I deleted the ~/.mozilla folder a second time and that got it working again. Then I installed google chrome and haven't tried it since. :P

I can try firefox again tonight and see if it still works, check which version I am using, and see if installing a plugin causes segmentation faults to return.

I'm also on a 64-bit system.

I am also on 64bit. As another test, I installed Flash plugin from the official repository and disabled AdBlock 2.1.2 (which was installed manually from the Firefox Add-Ons page. As a side note, I have always installed the add-ons from the Mozilla site as opposed to the official repository for that reason alone (the ones in the repository tend to lag behind in version updates. Anyways, as I said, I disabled AdBlock 2.1.2 (I did not remove it as I really rely on it to hide all the crap that out there on the net). I will post my findings.

It crashed again! Mouse starts to stutter when moving it around, and the computer is totally unresponsive. Had to hard reboot again to get out of it. Will continue testing tomorrow.

OK... so for me this problem appears to be related to Firefox 10.0.10, or one of it's dependencies, as the issue is not being seen in Chromium-browser (yes, the official releases from the repositories). I know that this issue did not occur in Firefox 10.0.9 and my plugins and extensions have not changed. Maybe someone can assist me in getting some detailed logs as all of my attempts to capture some have been futile thus far. When the crash occurs, my computer becomes unresponsive. I can move my mouse, while sputtering on the screen, and that is all. No key combinations work, no clicking of the mouse attempting to pull up a konsole works.... nothing except hard rebooting, which causes me to lose any logging.

To begin with, you can try starting it from terminal and see what happens during start and when it later crashes.

I never had the whole system become unresponsive. For me, firefox just died randomly and then spit out a "segmentation fault" in the terminal anytime I tried to restart it.

Although that may not have been nice, "troll" is a widespread and commonly used term, not necessarily having negative meaning.
If you post offtopic stuff, or disrupt normal on-topic discussion, or just complain unconstructively, that is not necessarily bad, but trollish.

But you think you are better? Moron is an ugly term, and in general calling people names is unconstructive and leads nowhere.
Apart from that, looking at the content of your post, i must refrain from giving any further comment what this looks like to me

I have tried starting it from console and writing to file, but because of the hang and the hard reboot to get my computer back, nothing got written to file.

I tried to use the command:

firefox -v > firefox_crash.txt

It created an empty file on my desktop called firefox_crash.txt.

Alright, I ran firefox 10.0.10 with no plugins on Mageia 2 x86_64, and it worked fine until I added AdBlock Plus 2.1.2. Then it segfault'd with the following terminal output:
Code: Select all
[john@phobos ~]$ firefox
LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library libXt.so [libXt.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory]
LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /home/john/.mozilla/plugins/nppdf.so [/home/john/.mozilla/plugins/nppdf.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32]
Segmentation fault

libXt.so is provided by lib64xt6, which I have installed. Anything I can try to run to help give more insight?

Well.... that didn't work! So I tried getting an strace on firefox..... GOT IT!!

At the end of the file is when my computer hangs.... mouse starts to sputter on the screen..... nothing I click on works...... nothing left to do but hard reboot. I've attached the log. If anybody can check out the output (as I have no idea how to determine what crashes the system), I would appreciate it. FYI - this issue only appears when I use Firefox 10.0.10. Chromium browser works without issue. Nothing has changed as far as my plugins or extensions are concerned. This issue began appearing after the Firefox 10.0.10 upgrade.

@hintzy64:
nppdf.so, (Acrobat Reader) which is the last thing it loads could also be a problem -> try disabling or removing it temporarily

Re: AdBlock Plus crashes Firefox

I started again by completely deleting the ~/.mozilla folder. This time, I didn't install any other plugins first. (I did Xmarks first last time, before I tried ABP, forgot to mention that.) The extensions tab in the add-ons is empty, and the plugins tab shows two plugins for google talk and one for flash. So this is as close to a vanilla firefox installation as I can get without removing google-talk and flash.

I search for Ad-Block Plus in the add-on search bar, select version 2.1.2, it downloads, and the instant it begins to install, it crashes with the terminal output:
Code: Select all
[john@phobos ~]$ firefox
Segmentation fault

And repeats the same thing if I try to restart firefox, until I delete the ~/.mozilla folder again. So it looks like the libXt and nppdf warnings I got the other day were related to something else. Sorry for the red herring. :P
