[SOLVED] KDE liveCD won't boot

Postby dekay » Jun 3rd, '11, 14:41

I can't get the KDE liveCD to boot.

First there is a graphical screen which is up for a maximum of 2 seconds, to select the monitor resolution and, I think, the language. But as it is white lettering on a white background, my old eyes find it almost impssible to read with it being up so briefly.

Next is what appears to be the start of a text boot, again for only a second or so. This is normal for a liveCD.

Finally, up comes the mageia splash screen, the one with 'mageia' and a row of dots. As soon as that appears, it stops booting. No further hard drive activity. I have waited about 20 minutes in case it resumed, but it doesn't.

The computer is locked, and I have to do a hard shut down.

I have tried three downloads from different mirrors, and four burns to disk. Every time it is the same.

There has been the suggestion of booting with 'nomodset', but I can't see anywhere of adding this command.

I don't know if this is another example of "the bug", but I thought it may be of interest.

Any suggestion of how to get it to boot, will be gratefully received.

Many thanks.

Cheers.

hi there ,
If you are using ubuntu based distro try
Code: Select all
sudo dd if=/home/NAME/mageia-ISO IMAGE NAME.iso of=/dev/sdb

Try using usb Pen-Drive

Where sbd is your pen drive and dont use sdb1 or whatever it maybe.

Hello tijybba.

Unfortunately I haven't got a pen drive, so I can't try your suggestion.

I have tried the live CDs of many distros, but mageia is the only one which causes problems.

As there doesn't seem to be another solution to the problem, I will have to abandon mageia for now and see if a later version works.

Keith,

The first screen you described as being hard to read is the one you use to enter boot options. But the Boot Option prompt does not appear until you do the following steps:

Press the F4 key to bring up the Kernel Option window.

Press the Escape key to close this window.

Press the Up Arrow key once to get back to selecting “Boot Mageia 1”.

The “Boot Options” should now appear and cursor is placed on it so you can enter your boot options.

Press the Enter key after you have entered your boot options and the boot process will proceed.

Hello rhtopics.

Thank you very much for your help and pointing me in the right direction. The problem is now solved.

If I select "No Local APIC" as the boot option, mageia boots up.

I've only had time for a quick look at it tonight, but will have a more thorough look tomorrow.

Thanks again.
