[SOLVED] Install Mageia 2 (LXDE) with wifi usb card

Postby Jose_Manuel » Oct 7th, '12, 22:54

I want to install Mageia 2 with LXDE interface in an old computer, the problem is that I only can get Internet through Wifi usb card with chipset Ralink 3070. I read in your web the following:

These DVD and CD ISOs are made of Free Software exclusively. As a consequence, proprietary Wi-Fi and video drivers are not included. If you need WiFi or specific video drivers at install time, you should go with below LiveCDs instead.

There is not a LiveCD version with LXDE, so I should install DVD of Mageia 2, but I need this Wi-Fi drivers to have Internet. The questions are: What packets do I have to download and install off-line? What steps should I do to install this packets? Thanks in advance. Regards.

you can find the firmware for your wifi key in this package: 8-)

http://mageia.c3sl.ufpr.br/distrib/2/x86_64/media/nonfree/release/ralink-firmware-20120421-3.mga2.nonfree.noarch.rpm

However I can't tell you if you'll need some other packages :?
try to install it and see what happens...

You will need the ralink-firmware package from the non-free repository
ftp://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/linux/Mageia/distrib/2/i586/media/nonfree/release/ralink-firmware-20120421-3.mga2.nonfree.noarch.rpm

Copy it to a USB flash,

Install Mageia from the DVD. At the Desktop selection screen select 'Custom' then at the next screen select LXDE desktop.

When installation is complete and you have booted into the system for the first time insert the USB flash, navigate to the USB drive and click on the ralink -firmware package to install it.

Next open MageiaControlCentre>Networking>Add a Connection and go through the wizard to add a wifi connection. It should be able to install all the other required packages from the DVD and set up the connection for you.

Thanks djennings,I'll install it in the following days. On the other way I've read there is a problem with LXDE and shutdown, the option of shutdown the computer doesn't appear in this interface, could I have this issue if I install this interface? How can I solve this issue? Thanks again. Regards.

AFAIK this issue only arises if you use slim or xdm as the desktop manager
https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1397

Use lxdm kdm or gdm and there will be no problem.
(BTW: You can select between the available installed desktop managers in MageiaControl Centre>Boot>SetUpDisplayManager
If you want to use autologin then ensure you do your updates since an update fixes a bug with autologin with lxdm )

Djennings I've installed Mageia 2 in my old computer, it's a Athlon 800 Mhz with 386 Mbytes RAM, I'm surprised because it's really fast with LXDE, even I installed fgrlx drivers and it has improved the performance of my old computer, the difference between Windows XP and Mageia 2 in old computer is clear, Mageia is quite better, the next step: My laptop.

I have another question: I can connect with my USB wireless card without problems, but when it's connecting to a router a message appears in a window: "Falló la conexión" --> Connection fails. I accept and set up the connection without problems. Why this message? Thanks in advance. Regards.

You mean at the final step, when configuring a wireless connection and it tries to test the connection?
The timeout is to short, so the test mostly fails, but the connection comes up working directly thereafter. That is a well-known problem ... :|

Doktor 5000 the problem has disappeared and Mageia 2 works without problems. Only 2 more questions: I have another usb adaptor with chip Realtek rtl8187, I haven't found the drivers for this chipset, just only for chipset 8192. The other question is flash player in MCC, I select and apply but it's not installed, only the tool of 1 kb. Thanks in advance. Regards.

For the Realtek, how did you look for the drivers? AFAIK you only need the rtlwifi-firmware package, besides the kernel-firmware-nonfree.
You may also want to take a look at https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=848#c6

For Flashplayer, there is a MAQeia: viewtopic.php?f=34&t=880

Jose, will you please be so kind, marking the topic solved.
You can do so by editing the subject-title of the first post, and pre-fix it with [SOLVED].

Thank you. ;)
