Driver problem with Nvidia 7950GTX

Driver problem with Nvidia 7950GTX

Postby Ira_Dosa » Oct 6th, '12, 11:39

Driver issue here.
Mageia2, NVIDIA 7950GTX.
nv, nouveau, nvidia only vesa works

Read all errata, wiki, and forum topics.
F3 grub 'xdriver=nvida' doesn't solve the problem either.

Anyone has it working?

Which same driver issue? Also there is no boot option "xdriver=nvidia".
What did you try already, and what did you change, and which error messages did you get?

Sorry nothing to do with black dots/pixels but I only get black screens.
Only with driver vesa I don't get a black screen.
Tried mcc hardware graphical server under KDE and CLI
and XFdrake.
Test gives either blackscreen and returns to test option or freezes up my pc,
Messages: 'No screen' or EE: (log message)

F3/F6 adding 'driver=nvidia' to grub startup I read in the wiki.

Well, the wiki doesn't list that option: https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Mageia_2_Err ... rd_drivers

Apart from that, the "Test" option in the X-server configuration is not that relevant and may fail at times,
depending on the currently loaded driver and from where/how you launched it.

Please first go through https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Setup_the_graphical_server and post the results here.

https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Mageia_2_Errata#Nvidia
Code: Select all
 Nvidia
Live CDs

Depending on your card you may add in the grub (f6):
    xdriver=nouveau
    xdriver=nvidia
xdriver=intel (if you have a system with both intel and nvidia gpu)

DVDs & Dual
See above, the procedure will be the same.

So this is a known bug?

I will do.
(Apart from not using 'Test' I did it dozen of times already, but maybe test is making trouble).

Whoops, only looked at the ATI part, sorry for the noise

To be honest, i've not used it since ages, but i know it doesn't work always and under every condition.
To my knowledge, there is no open bug report about that.

Like all attemps earlier; black screen.
Also with extra grub option xdriver=nvidia

Vesa always works (even with test :) )

Output? Should I look for a system/startup log?

ok, the card is supported by porprietary driver:

http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/47323

so please, with the network connected (MCC could need to download some packages),
install the nvidia driver and reboot the machine;

if the boot brings you again to a black screen, save the log file
Code: Select all

cp /var/log/Xorg.0.log /var/log/Xorg.0.log.saved

then back to vesa, reboot and post here the saved file

it seems a problem with your monitor,
it does not recognize it and starts with a "Nvidia Default Flat Panel (DFP-0)"

in the last log line it is trying to set a screen size.

[ 34.271] (II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "1600x1200"

Which kind of monitor do you have?
has it some video/mouse/keyboard switch or some other special hardware?

HP2035 shown as L2035 or Plug'nPlay.
A simple flatscreen, no bells and whistles.

Other resolutions like 1024x768 or 800x600 also failed.

Works with all other Linux disto's that I use(d) except ROSA 2012Marathon, which fails already at Install level.

Well, all those modelines should actually not be needed. Just rename/move away /etc/X11/xorg.conf and reboot or logout and back in again.
Apart from that, you may want to run drakx11 again afterwards, and please tell here exactly what you selected, especially regarding monitor and resolution and options.

It's getting routine :geek:

- renamed xorg.conf
- rebooted and started Mageia; a color palette with meshed up yellow and orange stripes appeared on the screen
- rebooted in safe mode; with XFdrake I picked the (default) GeForce 6100 to 360 card, the screen defaulted as Plug'n Play I didn't change and I choose a modest 1280x960
- rebooted and started Mageia; black screen
- rebooted in safe mode;
[EDIT} tried to copy the xorg.conf - but there was none !!
with XFdrake I picked vesa, Plug'n Play screen and resolution 1600x1200. Test worked.
- rebooted and started Mageia; KDE starts in 1600x1200 mode

You tell me ... (please)

Driver "vesa"

the xorg.conf you posted is for the vesa driver,
I guess the xorg.conf for the nvidia driver is more intresting.. :)

so you can try this way:

enable proprietary nvidia driver, reboot with blank screen,
go in recovery console and run nvidia-xconfig, reboot

nvidia-xconfig should create a default xorg.conf for the nvidia driver

NVIDIA driver chosen again.
Reboot in safemode.
Renamed /var/log/
'nvidia-xconfig' generated various WARNINGS (Unable to find CorePointer in X config ... regarding mouse and keyboard keyboard) and
Code: Select all
Backed up file 'etc/X11/xorg.conf to 'etc/X11xorg.conf.backup'
'New X configuration file written to etc/X11/xorg.conf'

'startx' gave 'EE: error messages and the screen went black.

Rebooted.
Copied the ('nvidia') Xorg.conf which has the content:
Don't bother about the date/time stamp :) it is my bios
Code: Select all

Is it an idea to use an other driver like 304 or 285 instead?
Where can I find the repo for these DKMS rpms?

Is it an idea to use the .run installer/drivers provided on the NVIDIA site and to uninstall the DKMS version 295?

Just ideas. ;)

if you type in you terminal

Code: Select all
man nvidia-xconfig

you can found a lot of nice otions like

Code: Select all
nvidia-xconfig −−mode=1600x1200

which could help you a lot, as this setting is missing in monitor section of your xorg.conf (nvidia version)

BTW,
Ira_Dosa wrote:'startx' geve 'EE: error messages and the screen went black.

these are the errors you are looking for,
so it would be very intresting to see them :)
if you cannot see them, try to press CTRL-ALT-F1 or CTRL-ALT-F2 when you have the blank screen,
you should be able to re see them.

or run
Code: Select all
startx  2>&1  file_to_be_posted.txt

so these lines will be saved on that file

more, you should run startx as normal user and no as root,
so before run startx, please do

Code: Select all
su - your_username

so you'll change user (type 'exit' to go back as root user)

So, some more testing to do. :)

The Monitor section; I noticed too the lack of 'normal' high resolution settings.
Looked to me the settings for my DVB-T card.

I'll be back

Gave this input at safe mode prompt.
Doesn't have effect in xorg.conf (No addition in Monitor section, where it is named as modeLine.)

tom_ wrote:try to press CTRL-ALT-F1 or CTRL-ALT-F2 when you have the blank screen,

Doesn't work at safe mode prompt nor when black screen appeared.
Works in konsole / terminal.

Started as user I got errors about not having Authority.
Run as root it started KDE desktop. (see note later)
I can't find however my file.
Tried twice. Second time with path.
No file!

Many distros don't allow root to get in graphical mode.
KDE login halt also any attempt (as long as default setting isn't changed by user)
Using a GUID program one should use 'su - program_name'

At Mageia2 safe mode prompt however root can use 'startx' ;)
