mageia2 x86-64 on core 2 duo desktop. boot with acpi=off.

On starting firefox, one core goes to 100% on the monitor (kde panel) for up to 5 min. and all usefull work is prevented.
"top" command shows firefox at maybe 25% and "wa" cpu state at up to 75%. Sum of "us" and "sy" is less than 50%
(Have checked firefox by disableing all plugins, extensions, flash - no change.)

When "msec" is doing its thing, same sort of problem. "wa" at 45% and msec_find at say 5% for maybe 5 min. us + sy < 50% one core at 100%.

A lot of disk thrashing at the time.

At this moment, with firefox and thunderbird open:
Cpu(s): 8.8%us, 1.0%sy, 0.0%ni, 90.0%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.2%si, 0.0%st

firefox at 15%, all is OK.


Any ideas?

Hi,

Could you please post here the exact output of top using a "Code" tag? I am not sure I understood what you said it shows...
Have you also checked the HDD state? Data transfer speed and file system condition?

Example grabbed while firefox is loading.
Fairly representative.
At the time this was grabbed, the monitor of cpu on the kde panel was showing one of the cores at 100%.
After this it was impossible to switch windows for a couple of minutes.

You can monitor disk usage with iotop, but you may need to install that first.
Disk health can be examined with smartmontools or gsmartcontrol.
Cauldron is not for the faint of heart!

Hi,

I am probably missing something, but the top output seems normal to me, I have no idea why KDE shows that high CPU consumption...
SMART is self-explanatory, so if there are no obvious errors it won't tell you more anyway.

The only thing, however, that comes to my mind is slow HDD data transfer rate. Actually, I have faced this problem several time on different Windows machines, so I am not sure if it is hardware or driver problem, but still. So what happened was exactly what you said - every program started cold took sometimes minutes to load and the system was totally unresponsive all that time. The reason was that HDD switched from normal UDMA to PIO mode with transfer rate of ~4MB/s, so no surprise it was running like crazy, but very slow... If it is what happens to you, check data transfer rate with Palimpsest. If it is 50-100MB/s, you are fine, if it is 4MB/s flat - it is PIO mode.

If it is not your case, could you take a look at console output when you start FF from terminal? What is it doing all that time?

Problem not seen with other programs. With firefox it happens only on the first load of the program by the user, don't know about msec.

OK, and what do you see in terminal when you start Firefox from there? Is it the same output if you run it as root?

P.S. And just in case - I assume you have Firefox (10.0.7 ESR) installed from the official repo... or is it anything else?

This post is a log of tests run over last 4 hours.

Firefox 10.0.7 installed and updated from mageia repo.

Logging into root and starting Firefox - system runs without the problem. CPU usage nominal. Did not stay in root long enough to see msec. Command "top" shows only summary info, no info on processes.

Logging in as user (main user) and starting Firefox from terminal - behaviour is as before, excessive CPU usage. No messages in terminal.

Logging in as a secondary user and starting Firefox - heavy CPU usage is mere seconds.

Have deleted ~/.mozilla and started fresh (main user) - no extensions, plug-ins disabled.
Extensive CPU usage and lockup for minutes while in first-time wizard (import - none) and later when in bookmarks - import html.

"top" showing "flush-8:16" while in locked-up condition on a couple of occassions.

Have tried gimp and impress to see about other largish programs - no problems seen.
Have tried copying a cd iso from sda6 to sdb6. No problem.

Onset of problem after reboot on start of Firefox is now delayed for a couple of minutes. Re-occurance now seems to be related to Mageia update notifier.

Can you run iotop in a terminal, and switch to it when you start firefox, as already asked earlier?

OK this got interesting. System ran for over an hour after reboot with Firefox open - no problem. Then I enabled the Flash plugin and navigated to a site (http://www.thepeoplescube.com) with flash content and the system went to s**t.
Shockwave flash 11.2 r202 last updated 21/08/12.
Only Firefox, terminal and Dolphin open. Has been fine now for another 15 min since it released from the lock condition. Can go to any site without problem.

iotop was running, iotop -ob
I think this excerpt is all of the period when the system was locked up. Note the flush-8:16.

8 lines from the bottom, where Thunderbird is opened shows when the lock-up condition had passed.

That is about it.

While setting up to make this reply, the system had it's little fit again.
The monitor showed one core fully used.

"Top" usually at times like this shows nominal cpu usage, lots of state "wa" .

Have turned off auto update checking in Firefox. Already reduced number of plug-ins and extensions which lowered the update checks. That seems to help. Will turn off mageia update check to investigate.

Hypothesis:
Seems related to Firefox update check, mageia update check, msec.
Problem mostly occurs in the minutes after first logging in, especially after boot-up.

Related to booting with acpi=off?

I expect that the answer will be to upgrade the motherboard as the recent kernels have exposed again the BIOS bug.

Once the system gets over this upset, it runs acceptably. I just have to go do something else while it gets around to talking to me.

Well, are you using the Mageia packaged version of firefox from the repositories (as there is no update checking there) or the tarball directly from mozilla?

And turning off acpi (which is mostly only a workaround in itself) may be the cause of stuff like this. Could you please post again
what machine or mainboard that is, and please attach a complete output of dmesg but please put it in a text file and compress that before attaching it here.

There are many other boot options for specific ACPI/APIC problems which may workaround your
BIOS problem with less drawbacks :)

There are many other boot options for specific ACPI/APIC problems which may workaround your
BIOS problem with less drawbacks


Been through them all with this version and for years previous. Used to be able to use acpi=ht successfully, not now.
Have not tried clocksource=jiffies recently though.

foxconn 975x7ab. Had many a go-around with foxconn customer "support" back when it was new. No hope of BIOS upgrade.

Yes it looks like it, but Firefox is not the only activity which can trigger the situation. Thunderbird is not part of the problem here.

I think the author of that bug report has captured only a piece of the puzzle, as probably have I.

Does the delay with high cpu usage always happen after a reboot on the first launch of Firefox? If not this may be different issue.
It's a 2 minute delay here in mga2 - my system / is on an SSD, so Firefox normally launches instantly

Yes.

Now that I have disabled the check for updates of plug-ins, Firefox loads quickly enough but after about a minute or so the CPU usage on one core goes to 100% and user interaction with the system is frozen out for about 5 min.

This upset can also happen without Firefox being on, I think when msec does it's thing or when mgaapplet runs. Aside from these intervals, the system runs acceptably except for the inability to do a proper shutdown - the acpi thing.

barjac: Do you have any acpi issues on your machine?

Will add to the bug report when I have a better handle on the problem. I.e. I think the emphasis is not on Firefox but that it is one trigger of the situation. It is probably the heaviest load I throw at the system normally.

barjac: As a side issue could you tell me (PM?) what you use for an SSD? File system? Partitions? Configuration parameters?
How is it working out?

This sounds different. If I run FF in safe mode (which I assume disables plugin checking) I see no change in the first start time.
Do you see any difference between the first start time of Firefox compared to subsequent re-starts after a re-boot?
I assume that if you disable msec and mgaapplet then the problems dissappear? How much RAM do you have?
I have no ACPI issues that I am aware of.

This appears to be the fix.

Have successfully booted up a couple of times now. The interval while the system is unresponsive on starting Firefox is now just seconds. The graph of CPU load is now much more responsive. The times of 100% load (on the one core) are broken up.

"top" shows that the CPU state "wa" now does not go beyond 20 something percent (used to go to 99% for minutes), and only briefly.

At this moment the kde panel monitor shows 100% load on one of the cores, but "top" shows:

Have some more things to look into before I mark this topic solved. I want to revisit the need to use acpi=off. Maybe now I can use something less restrictive as I used to (- before systemd?).

Update: Call this an improvement, not a fix. Intervals of non-responsiveness are shorter but still exist. System clock runs slow.

Having a look at Kororaa17 (in it now). Does not exhibit the problem.

No not in mageia2, where the lock-up problem persists even when the cpu usage is nominal.
Do not see it listed for mageia3, where the problem does not exist.

I am going to mark this thread as solved because the "subject" is now misleading.

With the clocksource tweak the cpu usage is no longer showing as excessive on the monitor, which reveals that the problem is in fact a lock-out situation occurring for about 5 minutes starting seconds after log-in and again for minutes when msec does its thing.
Since the problem does not exist in Mageia3 (yet?) I will probably now just have to wait.
