[SOLVED] NVIDIA display settings asking for root

[SOLVED] NVIDIA display settings asking for root

Postby hooverje » Sep 1st, '12, 06:27

Running Mageia 2 KDE with a nvidia geforce gtx 550 ti.
New to Mageia, I was running Mint gnome2/KDE.

Nvidia display settings/x server display configuration, when trying to save to x configuration it says I need to login in as root.
This is a fresh install I already went to MCC and set up repos and I also set up the nonfree, I saw the nvidia drivers in the list and updated all and rebooted, how do I log in as root, I went to MCC being that it asks you to login as root and then left root running and went back to nvidia display settings but nothing changed, still could not save.

MCC/videocard displays my 550ti but shows geforce 400 drivers, went in to konsole (not my favorite place) and tried the su - and root password ran nvidia-xconfig all that did was freak me out with the same result, still cant save.

Please Help, thanks

Hooverje, very welcome to the Mageia-forum!!! :)
Hope you will have great times around.
Please don't forget to read, how you can support our magical distribution.
https://www.mageia.org/en/contribute/

Having no NVIDIA-environment at hand, i think to remember:
Press Alt+F2 (run-command-dialog-box appears), and give following input:

Code: Select all
kdesu nvidia-settings

This will be followed by another box asking you for root-password.

isadora, thank you very much, that worked!!!!
I did use that command, but in konsole, I was reading the online documentation for Mageia and Nvidia I must have misunderstood the directions, everything els went very smooth, how to setup repos, setting up nonfree for the nvidia drivers and so on.

I have been using Mint gnome2 for my main desktop for about 4 years (I only use windows to play games these days) but when gnome2 went away I tried Mint KDE, but then I saw on distrowatch Mageia shoot up to # 2 in a year so I gave it a spin,
I love Mageia control panel and the Mageia KDE distro is fantastic so far, I am looking for a perminent os to use and I like what I see thus far, I will begin setting up my hardware and the software I like, if all is well after that, then this will most likely be the distro I stick with, if so, I will contribute to Mageia, again, thank you isadora, its been a pleasure so far.

You can do so, by editing the first post in this topic, and pre-fix the title with [SOLVED].

Thanks in advance, and have great fun with Mageia. ;)
