Which package contains XFree86?

Which package contains XFree86?

Postby mailedfist » Aug 15th, '12, 00:43

I have recently changed graphics card to an ATI Radeon 9200 (the machine is a server, with no PCIe x 16 slots, and only 3.3V PCI, so there is limited choice).

I can't use the latest fglrx drivers as they no longer support the Radeon 9200. However, ATI (AMD) still have the old drivers available to download.

This should have made installation straightforward, but it isn't because I have no /usr/X11/bin directory and no XFree86 binary for it to use. Which package do I need to install please?

There is no /usr/X11/bin directory here and no XFree86 binary. Do you try to install the Radeon drivers via urpmi or some kind of shell script?
X11 turns up in /etc and /etc/X11/X points to /usr/bin/Xorg. I probably cannot help you much as an nvidia user but this might get the discussion going.

XFree86 has been deprecated by X.org, since quite some time (several years) ...

Thanks doktor5000. I hadn't researched this properly. It looks like the "Xorg" command may provide similar argument options to the old "XFree86", so I may be able to get the build script to work by using a symbolic link or some minor edits. We'll see!

OK, I am stuck with the slow but functional open-source driver. The older ATI driver won't compile with a recent kernel and I have more important fish to fry.....!
