2 of everything in top and bottom panel

Postby rejean » Aug 23rd, '12, 02:45

Hi all!
On my top panel I have right now from left to right; Applications, Place, Wed Aug 22 21:37, Wed Aug 22 21:37, Wed Aug 22 21:37, one globe icon for the Network, one icon for the sound, one 2 monitors for the Network, and my name rejean 3 times.
On the bottom panel I have one firefox icon and the name of the tab Mageia forum . Post..., one icon for Chromium and the name of the tab CBC.ca Radio-Chro..., one [Mageia Control Cent... and 3 icons for firefox. Everything else is working fine.
I have reinstalled Mageia 2 today to see if it was a bad installation. I should also add that I also have a tv set hooked on the s-video plug of my nvidia FX5500 card.
Any idea what is going on?

Have you installed using a pre-existing /home partition?

It sounds like you have a previous configuration saved in ~/.gconf
(Assuming you are using gnome, your post does not actually say)

Rename or delete your ~/.gconf folder and log out and log back in again.
You will then get a fresh default desktop.

Thanks djennings!
I had used an old /home partition but decided to format it.
Your trick did work except that previously I had made a few changes which required using the DVD (I have one with the .iso only and another one with the full download but neither worked) so upon rebooting I ended up in Gnome 3 but many of the characters are replaced with a little square and when I open anything I end up with a big empty blue square. So I will reinstall tonight and if I still see doubles I will rename ~/.gconf before doing anything else.
