MGA 2 LiveCD black screen at boot unless...

OK, this Toshiba A305 w/ Intel Mobile 4 graphics (GM45) laptop may have hdwr issues however don't want to get bogged down in that right now. I understand that this hdwr issue may be relevant but maybe not, as I was able to install PCLOS 2012.x with no installation issues and am able to boot MGA 2 IF I DO the following:

Some preliminary info
1. PCLOS 2012.02 currently installed on HD.
2. RAM has been reseated and memtest thru 3 passes w no errors.

Trying MGA 2 LiveCD on it.

1. Boot LiveCD
2 .Hit ESC to view verbose boot
Boot goes through all the normal [OK] verbosity except for :
"Load legacy module configuration [FAILED]"
then continues with normal[OK] stuff, then hangs at :

using '/etc/ld.so.conf.d/GL/standard.conf' to provide 'gl_conf' and then black screen.

Ok so checked errata and tinkered with kernel option xdriver=intel but no go, then just for fun after several hard reboots I tried ALT+ SYSRQ+REISUB. If I complete this sequence I get a reboot which is expected. If however I ALT+SYSRQ+R, then E and hold it until some messages pass, then I, it will continue to boot in graphical mode starting with a mouse on black screen, then"choose timezone, "accept license", etc and I can continue on to a full working desktop. Upon logout I receive a message to the effect of " there was a problem starting the graphical server"

So obviously LiveCD MGA2 ran on this laptop but will not unless I do the "halfway" REISUB trick. This is very strange as E and I first allows all processes to gracefully, then forcefully terminate. How is boot continuing?

Trying not to muddy the waters, but a clue may be that on this laptop, in MGA2 LiveCD and in the installed PCLOS 2012.x, X runs on tty8 when I believe normal is tty7. While booted into the MGA2 LiveCD desktop X is indeed running on tty8. CTRL+ ALT F7 gives black screen CTRL+ ALT F8 gives me back the desktop. !?!?!

Any ideas appreciated

Code: Select all
ALT+ SYSRQ+E
Sends a sigterm to all running processes except init, so whatever was hanging is terminated and the boot process continues.
As far as what the real problem is I have no idea but in Cauldron I have used that a few times to bypass hangs.

Hi
I have exactly the same problem on my hp tm2 laptop(intel graphic). boot goes well until " using '/etc/ld.so.conf.d/GL/standard.conf' to provide 'gl_conf' ", then screen flicker 3 times and then graphical boot stops. but most of the time i could get into console via <Ctrl>+<Alt>+F2 .
Also i try some safe boot options like acpi=off, noapic, xdriver=intel or vesa but no success. :(
I haven't try <Alt>+SysRq yet, i will try it and i hope i could boot into mageia 2 and install it.

------------------

Sadly i couldn't boot up on mageia. :(
After black screen i try with Alt+SysRq+R then press Alt+SysRq+E multiple times, and finally Alt+SysRq+I , but graphical boot doesn't continue.
The iso image i was downloaded a month ago seems ok, because after i burnt it on cd, my pc(nvidia gfx) boot up with it completely. But my laptop doesn't have any cd/dvd rom and i use usb stick to boot.
Please help me, i really want to try mageia (i'm little tired of fedora) ;) .
