[SOLUTION] AdBlock Plus crashes Firefox

Postby nilst2012 » Aug 7th, '12, 05:04

It is kind of strange that it is always Firefox that end up being a problem in Linux. I can't get Adblock Plus to work in Firefox. I can't change the filter settings. Firefox crashes every try. This kill my interest of Mageia completely. There is a reason to use addons. maybe not Your fault, but Firefox seems to be a huge annoyance every time i try any Linux dist. Too bad really. On Windows i use Palemoon. No problems there. Firefox suck even on Windows....

It's true that I don't modify filter settings in Adblock Plus but it works for me as it should.

Does this happen also in freshly created profile?

One hint nilst2012: giving the title of your topic a more meaningful text, could probably lead to more attention.

Also works here, too. FWIW, which firefox and adblock plus versions are you using?

Carefully reading the post I suspect a troll looking for a bite from members.
Especially with the reference to Windows as well.

As this problem has already been reported (adblock plus crash when changing filterlist) i think it's a valid post, although the attack on firefox is quite a bit trollish.

I even can't reach them, Firefox crashes every F time....

I go to Addons, choose Filter settings....and Firefox crashes....

Have even reinstalled Mageia, still the same BS-behaviour by Firefox.

Firefox have had many problems through the years with addons. Sure maybe the creator of the addons have made something wrong, but f.ex on Windows addons work in Palemoon but in Firefox there will be some problems. Palemoon is a tweaked version of Firefox. Why it should work smoothly in Palemoon and not in Firefox is very strange.

I do like Firefox to, but all bugs are too much on and off.

But can i copy my settings from Windows XP to Mageia - for Adblocker ? Or is it incompatible ? If i can - how do i do that ?

You can copy the contents of the firefox profile, which can also be done for thunderbird. Maybe http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_ ... _-_Firefox will help you.

Apart from that, please stop the badmouthing about firefox. Here it works, and didn't crash during the last years, and i have quite some addons enabled, among them Adblock Plus, Adblock Plus Popup Addon & Element hiding helper for Adblock Plus and other which do even deeper changes in Firefox. If it works for others, it's no general problem with Firefox, but a local configuration problem.

Adblock from the Firefox addon manager wouldn't work for me as well, but the one in Megeia's package manager works great.

There shouldn't be much differences, but FWIW:

- the mageia packaged addons, when installed, are available to all users on multi-user-systems
- the mageia-packaged-addons do not get updated that often, and can't be updated via Firefox addon manager

I'm only using Firefox addons directly installed from upstream (via Addon Manager f.ex.) and they're all working fine.

I'm not sure why it worked to be honest. After a fresh install a few days ago one of the first things I did was install adblock from Firefox addons and the exact thing that was described happened to me. I noticed that it was available from mageias packages and gave it a shot. Like I said I'm not sure why it worked, but it'll keep me happy until I can sort it out. For the record I'm using the release that installed with the distro, Firefox ESR 10.0.6.

I am not a troll i am a beginner of Mageia and expect some help here, but i seem not to get any from You. Thanks for being rude and attack me instead of giving me some good help !

Yes, i do refer to how things works in Windfows because i have used it since NT4. But Firefox i started to use some years ago. Then i switched to Palemoon because that works as i should be expect Firefox to work as well.

Still today when i try to reach FILTERSETTINGS in Adblock Plus Firefox crashes.

WHAT TO DO TO CHANGE THE SETTINGS ???????????????????? Someone that actually have a GOOD answer ??????

Why are Firefox still in version 10 ???? Isn't it time to get the latest ????

have to tell You i have made a fresh install of Mageia less than 2 hours ago....

So you have an issue with Firefox. You come here for help. Your first post did get some replies. You should give more details.

What you should not do:
- writing in capital letters. It is regarded as shouting and doesn't help you.
- badmouthing Firefox when the issue is not with Firefox in general but somewhere in your combination of Firefox version and Adblock version. As you see, it works elsewhere.
- badmouthing or offending others will not solve your issue, quite the opposite.
- lash out after Firefox: First Mageia is not the maker of Firefox. Second: lashing out after something will never solve your problems, you only make a fool of yourself. Third: nobody here accepts such meaningless and useless talk anyway.

As for the version, Mageia 2 (the current official) uses the current Firefox ESR version - it is the latest of the ESR versions.

I think nilst2012 is frustrated because Firefox is not working correctly. That is within the borders IMHO.
So the answer to your question nilst2012 is basically that, given the data provided, nobody knows what is wrong with that installation. That may be a disappointing conclusion given your expectation of Mageia being perfect. It also leaves the ball in your ballpark.

If you can provide more data (not always easy) then you might get further help and maybe a fix. Or you can of course try some other distro.
An easy way out would be to try Opera or Chromium instead...

It seems like Firefox is behaving almost as bad as IE in your case - and that is unfortunate, so you have my sympathy.

Yes, Viking, that's what I said. Of course I understand that the user is frustrated, I would be as well. :)
As I do not have any issue with Firefox (ESR) I can't really help with the issue. Only give advice for more successful posting in general.

I'm having an issue with Firefox and AdBlock Plus too. Just installed Mageia 2 64bit KDE from the LiveCD. Updated everything which put Firefox at 10.0.9. Started adding addons in this order with no restart NoScript, Cookie Monster, Better Privacy and then AdBlock. Firefox crashed(CTD) with no error message during or at the end of the AdBlock install. Now when I try to launch the browser window pops up for a split second and disappears. It doesn't show in the tray as a running program but shows in system monitor as still running and using 7-9% and Stop and Kill won't shut it down. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling and still the same results. I'm assuming there's some data/setting/cfg files being left behind after removing the package, anyone know what and where?

Hmm...guess nobody knows or I shouldn't have posted in this thread although I found it a pretty amusing read:) Well maybe I'll try Mageia again when 3 comes out.

Adblock Plus crashes Firefox

Postby zugunder » Nov 6th, '12, 06:57

Hi,
Could anyone confirm this (either Mageia 1 or 2)?
All of a sudden AdBlock Plus 2.1.2 started to crash my Firefox 10.0.10 (no manipulations with either software have been made apart from a recent Firefox update). First I tried to check Adblock settings and Firefox crashed, then it began to crash at start, so I had to run it in a safe mode. With everything (addons, plugins, skins) being disabled Firefox starts OK, but as soon as I activate single Adblock, it crashes with only "segmentation fault" in terminal output.
I also tested Adblock Edge 2.0 (which is a fork of AdBlock Plus 2.1.2) and it also causes segfault. Only Adblock Lite 1.4.3 (based on an older version of Adblock Plus) works without crashes.
However, this very AdBlock Plus 2.1.2 works fine with IceApe Navigator.
All browsers installed from Mageia repos, Adblock installed within browsers.
Mageia1 64bit, KDE.

Thank you.

I am also experiencing the crashing, but I thought it was the Flash plugin, so I uninstalled it. It still crashed. Now, whenever it crashed on me, it would also freeze my entire computer. No magic key reset or any other key combinations would get me out of it except a hard reboot. If I worked on the computer without using Firefox, everything was fine. As soon as I started Firefox, everything would slowly deteriorate until it crashed again. Now, I am not sure if it was Adblock or Flash, but the problems started after this last Firefox update.

So Adblock was not installed via Mageia packages? Could you please verify via
Code: Select all
rpm -qa | grep firefox-ext

Anyways, there is another other thread about the same problem: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=3212
