I took the advice and after making a completely fresh install, booted into run level 3,
ran XFdrake from the prompt and this time scrolled until I found the option with VESA
in its title. After selecting it and rebooting, the system came up as originally expected.

For clarification for other suffering users:

1) By fresh install, I mean that I re-formatted every partition.
2) On re-booting when the grub menu came up, press <ESC>
3) Press OK when the caution displays.
4) With the top line ("linux") highlighted, press the letter "e"
5) and again at the next screen
6) The cursor should be blinking at the right of a line that starts <UID. mine ends at the
right with 788. Either way, press the space-bar followed by 3
7) Press the <ENTER> key followed by "b"
The system will now come up at runlevel 3 with a character-based login. Insert your
log-in name, press <ENTER> and then your password followed by <ENTER>.
You will now be at the user-level prompt.
8) You now need to be at the administrator level (root). At the prompt enter 'su' and
press <ENTER>. Next insert the root password and <ENTER> again.
The resulting prompt should now have changed from a $ to a #.
9) Enter XFdrake and <ENTER>. Note the XF in upper case.
10) When it comes up use the Up-arrow key to highlight 'Graphic Card' and press <ENTER>
11) Using the Up or down arrow keys locate the option: Vendor!Other|VESA driver (generic)
12) Press the TAB key (usually above <Caps Lock> to shift the focus to <OK>.
!3) Hit <ENTER> and then exit and from the # prompt enter 'reboot' without the quotes
and press <ENTER>.

I cannot describe this as [SOLVED] because the above is just a kludge. I hope that this
gets resolved soon because this apart, this implementation of a KDE4 driven linux is
an absolute delight.

I posted the results of my successful attempt severaol days ago but it seems to
have got lost! Here is my second attempt. I have triec to make it as simple to
follow as possible but if it is inadequate, I would be happy to edit it.

The starting point was that on boot-up the system would hang after issuing a
line stating that it was 'Starting Wait for Plymouth Boot Screen to Quit'.

The step by step solution was as follows:

1) On boot-up, at the grub menu press <ESC>.
2) When the dialog warning you that you are about to enter text mode, Press <OK>
3) Select the line indicating the kernel you wish to boot from and press <e>
(Note: lower case)
4) The cursor will flash at the end of a line that looks something like:

<UID=a string of numbers in my case followed by vga=788.
Enter a space followed by a 3 and press <ENTER>

5) Press <b> to re-boot
6) when the system comes up it will halt at a text prompt. Enter your
user-name press <ENTER> then your password <ENTER>
7) At the $ prompt enter XFdrake and press <ENTER>
8) At the text menu that presents itself, use the navigation keys to
reach 'Graphic Card' and hit <ENTER>
9) A list of options under the heading 'Choose an X Server' scroll up
or down, again using the navigation keys until you reach an options
marked Vendor|Other|VESA driver (generic) and press the <TAB> key
usually above the <Caps Lock> key. The <OK> key should now be
highlighted. Press <Enter>.
10 Use the <TAB> key again until >Quit> is high-lighted and press <ENTER>

10) Now enter reboot and press <ENTER>
11) Once the system comes up you can either go to the Control Center->
Hardware->Set up the graphical server and accept the proprietary
driver when offered or instead download and install, the AMD Catalyst
proprietary driver from:

Best of luck
