Samsung CL-315 prints too dark

Samsung CL-315 prints too dark

Postby arromdee » Aug 1st, '12, 04:12

Using this printer on 32 bit Mageia 2, I get output which has all colored areas very dark, making it useless for printing anything except pure text files which are black and white with no greyscale or colors.

The same problem happens regardless of what program I use to print (for instance, Firefox or Gimp).

The printer works fine on Windows and worked mostly fine on Mandriva 2010.

I tried going to the foo2qpdl page and getting the newest driver from there, which didn't help at all. I believe that Mageia is using the same driver as them anyway.

The foo2qpdl page tells me that "ghostscript 9.+ is broken w.r.t. color. Don't use". Needless to say, Mageia 2 uses ghostscript in the 9 series. I also found https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2463 which suggests ghostscript problems that caused another printer to be too dark; however, that also suggests that the problem is fixed in 9.04.1-1 and I have 9.05 already.

In addition, I can print in 1200x600 resolution, but 600x600 resolution just produces a printout with an error message.

I haven't that hardware,
but it seems that this is an old problem and that you can try to fix it using
a different printer driver

here some link:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/378068

please give us feedback on this problem :)

The second link has someone replace the Ghostscript-based pdftops with a Poppler-based pdftops. How would I do that?

I guess the cups filter is this one

Code: Select all
/usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftops

but I don't know if changing the file is enough for you,
it manages a lot of parameters so your new script should accept the same parameters

Code: Select all
$ /usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftops
Usage: /usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftops job user title copies options [filename]

Thanks, using the Samsung driver did help.

Of course, I should not *have* to use the Samsung driver. If I need Samsung's driver and the standard driver won't work (especially if I was able to successfully use it in Mandriva 2010), something is wrong.
