[SOLVED] Mageia 2 (64 bit) on Acer Aspire 5135-2122

Postby stabbmesiter » Jul 14th, '12, 16:32

Hi,
Trying to install Mageia 2 onto an Acer Aspire 5315-2122

Problem is that it keeps hanging....blank screen, nothing to report, it just sits there.

I've changed the boot options to get rid of the splash-quiet and also put in xdriver=interl.

No joy.

Here's the spec's link.

http://support.acer.com/acerpanam/noteb ... 5sp2.shtml

Really want to get this installed but don't know what else to try ...any ideas anyone.

Regards

Where does it hang exatly? Please, some more details ...
I assume you mean during the initial boot of the successfully installed system, but can you tell more how far it boots at all?
Does it stop directly after the bootloader, with a blank screen?

this is from booting the cd. I do not get a live (user) system up

It doesn't get to load the live cd. It seems to hang and the last message seen is (similar but not exact)

Failed to load legacy .....

can't remember the rest and won't have access 'til monday. Plus I think that this is normal as I seem to see the same on my desktop machine

Mandriva 2011 has the same problem (kernel 2.6.x) does not load
Mint 13 (mate) loads
suse 12.1 (both cd and open DVD) loads
Fedora 17 loads

But Mandriva/Mageia are the only distros I've tried that are able to connect to the internet via bluetooth/cell phone 'out of the box' or better put 'off the cd/dvd'

I'll try and get more details but access is a bit limited....work/distance etc

gotta love Linux, I'm a Brit, trying to help an American, both in Brasil

Thanks for the interest.

The Acer currently has MS Vista loaded and .......wow......slow, slow, slow but loads....gotta change over to extend the life of the laptop, internet access is a necessity (no broadband where I live).

Regards.

Sorry for the delay – last two thing seen are
.
Started Legacy USB proc File System
'using '/etc/ld.so.conf.d/GL/standard.conf' to provide 'gl_c

Sorry again, didn't get the final bit but I think it was 'gl_conf'

after seeing the above, the screen goes blank (looks like it switches the screen off and is not displaying a black screen) and disk/cd activity stops.

I've waited up to an hour to see if anything else happens...no joy.

Hope that helps.

Yes, it's an old laptop - about 5 or 6 years (not too old) 1gb ram, 80gb hd etc
I'll try it with the acpi=off option and let you know.

BTW, just checked my desktop boot and it has noapic and NOT acpi=off in it's boot up, so which is correct or is it both?
Also on my desktop in the advanced option it has the Enable ACPI ticked (as in use) so which is correct?

This isn't a biggy for me as the laptop is running (abet without bluetooth support) Linuxmint now. Would be nice to get to the bottom of it though. I do loike Mageia....seems to work well.

both, acpi and apic are similar only when spelling :)

acpi
apic

here there is the full list of kernel pararmeters

BTW, you could also check the parameters of the Linuxmint you have now running,
just to have some idea. which kernel version is it using?

Whoops.....you are correct and I am wrong on the acpi or apic parameters.

Sorry about that.

I'll check the mint settings out and try them on Mageia.

Many thanks for the reply. Your English is fine and a LOT better than my French.

I followed the link
https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1803

That you added above and had great fun reading the resolutions.

Flashlights
root password for the live cd?
Downloading Mandriva 10.2
People having kernel panics when trying to do stuff.

With MS Vista on the other drive I think I'll leave things as they are as I don't want to blow that away.
So, unless there are other resolutions I'll close this down in the next few days (maybe a week).

Still using Mageia on my desktop...And apart from not powering down (for which I have a finger and a power button) I am very pleased with it.

Many thanks again

(SOLVED) Re: Mageia 2 (64 bit) on Acer Aspire 5135-2122

Postby stabbmesiter » Jul 26th, '12, 23:09

HI All,
Pleased to say that from aranud87's reply above I found something to try, which was

xdriver=vesa

for the boot parameters. Very pleased to say that it worked!
I was able to boot from the live CD and then proceded to install (getting rid of Linuxmint). Connected no problems to the internet via bluetooth/cell phone and have started the updates. And is it (Mageia) fast compared to MS VISTA on the same machine?....oh yes indeed. It's like a new machine.

On a by the by, anyone know any good links for the Enlightenment desktop?, tried it out last night for the first time. Beautiful or what!

Many thanks for all the input/help.
