Desktop Stuffed After KDE "Upgrade" - MGA-1

Postby Brodo » Jun 15th, '12, 09:12

I had a clean install of MGA-1 all set up and working as I wanted. THEN I allowed it to upgrade (700 files). Part of the auto-update were new KDE-4 files....

Since the upgrade None of my desktop icons are present, There is just a link to the shortcut text file, if I double click on it it opens that config file. The same thing has happened to the icons on the Quick Launch side of the Toolbar. I am unable to create new icons, when I click "Create new link to application" there is no browse to app field" in the box that opens.

Also my system clock is locked to UTC as all the local options have disappeared from the "Date and Time" section of the KDE Settings folder. They are still there in MCC but KDE must over ride the MCC settings.

The update also changed many other desktop settings but I was able to get them back. What the hell happened ??

TIA

Hi Brodo,

I'm not sure what happened and I wish I could see your system.
Part of what you mention seems to have something to do with what is mentioned here:

I saw that before I posted. It's close to my problem but not quite it. I'm running a basic system using the the default environment with effects turned off.

On my system it appears that the symlinks between the short cuts and the applications are broken and I need some idea of how to fix them. I can create a new link to a folder by going Create New -> "Basic link to file or directory" but no other short cuts work. It's almost like a package was missed during the auto-upgrade but I have no idea which one.

Can someone PLEASE advise a possible fix for this problem ???
I can get along without the icons as the Start menu still works but I'd really like to get my clock back onto local time rather than UTC.

Sorry, I still don't have a clear picture of what is wrong. Doesn't any short cut work, or do only the ones you added in Mageia 1 not work (any more)?

BTW, my taskbar clock shows UTC, too, but I thought I had chosen for my system clock to be set to UTC, because I had deliberately set it to UTC on my other laptop.

But now I see I can't have set it to UTC. When I right click on the time and choose to adjust time and date, I see it gives the CEST time. Besides, running (as root)
Code: Select all
hwclock
and
Code: Select all
date
both show my system is set to CEST, too.

I just saw this bug https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5851

I'm not sure it is the same bug, though. Does the workaround in comment 3 or the one in comment 12 of that bug fix it for you (for me it doesn't)

I'll now log into LXDE to see whether the bug is present there, too

Time is correct in LXDE, but still not when back in KDE. I'll ask in that bug report which DEs everyone used

There are no longer any short cuts/icons on my desktop just the ".desktop" text files that live in my /home /user/Desktop directory. Clicking on them opens the text file in KWrite instead of opening the desired program. This applies to all short cuts including the "Factory installed" ones. Deleting and attempting to re-create the shortcuts/icons doesn't work. To see what I'm seeing, create a link to an ordinary text file on your desktop.

Re the time zone, in the Desktop System Settings ->System Admin -> Date & time -> Timezone screen the only time zone listed is UTC, all other time zones have disappeared. All time zones are still listed under MCC->System->Manage Date & Time and MCC is set to the correct zone (ACST= UTC+9.5). My only option is to set the clock in the BIOS to the correct local time but then I can't use NTP. No way of setting the time/time zone works.

If you create a new user and login as that new user, do (all) those problems still occur then, too?

Yes. I've tried that and the same problems occur on the new account.

The same problems with the desktop shortcuts or the time problem?

Also, how exactly did you do the upgrade? 700 packages seems only a small part of an upgrade. And as it sounds like, you didn't complete the upgrade yet.

As the Doktor said 700 packages isn't an upgrade to Mageia 2.
Perhaps you meant an update of Mageia 1?

Both

Also, how exactly did you do the upgrade? 700 packages seems only a small part of an upgrade. And as it sounds like, you didn't complete the upgrade yet.

Sorry, a mixup in terminology, it was an update. 700 was the number given by the update program at the end of the run.

No mixup in terminology, what you did is commonly called an upgrade, but it doesn't matter at all what words we use for it, until we find out what the problem is.
The problems you're describing (UTC/local time optionsmissing from KDE clock settings) sound like Mageia 2, so presumably the update applet told you something like "A new version is available" something like this?

This is not complete, 700 packages are not enough. Can you please show the output of
Code: Select all
rpm -qa | grep mga2 | wc -l
and
Code: Select all
rpm -qa | grep mga1 | wc -l
and
Code: Select all
urpmq --list-url

I subscribe to most of the backport and debug repo's as well as the normal update ones so the list is rather long. I presume the main thing you are after is the URL of the download mirror. All files were downloaded from

(http:)//mirror.internode.on.net/pub/mageia/distrib/1/x86_64/media/xxx/xxx (eg /nonfree/release)

I put the "http" in brackets so I could print the complete address here instead of it showing as an abbreviated link

So we misunderstood, you only did a normal update of Mageia 1 with Mageia 1 updates, as there are no Mageia 2 packages present.
For the problem, in general you shouldn't enable backports, debug and testing repositories, only _release and _updates.

Otherwise i'm afraid i don't have much clues. Can you login to the xguest account, does the problem still persist?
And also please do the following as root:
Code: Select all
urpmi.update --ignore debug && urpmi.update --ignore backports && urpmi --auto-update

and please post the output here.

I deleted the xguest account (I don't like guest accounts) but have a second account on the machine which exhibits the same problems. If I create a new account the problem is still there.

And also please do the following as root:
