[OBSOLETE] lilo does not boot after upgrade mga1 -> mga2

Postby magfan » Jun 6th, '12, 14:17

I upgraded from Mageia 1 to Mageia 2 on a system with linux software raid. This system was used to boot with lilo but now lilo seems to fail because of the size of initrd. Is there any possibility to switch to grub? None of the "solutions" in thread https://forums.mageia.org/en/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2487&hilit=lilo worked for me.

I just realized that "dracut -f" creates an "initrd-3.3.6-desktop-2.mga2.img" instead of an "initrd-3.3.6-server-2.mga2.img". The string desktop does not appear anywhere else in /boot. Where does dracut get this information from? There are only "*kernel-server*" packages installed. Nothing like "*kernel-desktop*".

Yes, when you do an upgrade with the Mga2 DVD or Wired Network-based Installation CD.

I tried it but I am offered only to select one of the defined partitions. It is not possible to select a boot manager.

The boot manager kicks in after grub so get grub working first.

Are selecting the root of the drive?
For example /dev/sda should work /dev/sda1 will not.

You mean the screen you get is different than the one shown here http://doc.mageia.org/content/setupBootloaderBeginner.html and where it says "Bootloader to use" you can't change Lilo into Grub by using the drop down menu?

In that case it works different during upgrade than I thought :(

Could you please upload a screenshot of that screen?
