Gimp tools stuck in one place in Mageia 2

Gimp tools stuck in one place in Mageia 2

Postby mailedfist » Jun 5th, '12, 23:36

Am I being silly here? I used Gimp for the first time since upgrading to Mageia 2 today, and I can't get the tools to move! I'm sure I used to just click the top of the window and drop it where I wanted in Mageia 1, but it now resolutely stays where it was when opened. Help please!

Well, that was one of the wishes during the freeze period, as users wanted to have the new gimp which now supports a single window interface.

I'm not sure that's it though. Windows->Single Window Mode is not ticked, which should mean it did what it used to, shouldn't it?

I'm not sure which of KDE and Gimp has gained a bug. If you switch to Single Window Mode, then back again, the tools move to the top right. You can then drag it, as used to be possible, once, but once you've dropped it, that's it.

I don't know how you installed Mageia, but my GIMP lets me toss it all over the place.

Click on the GIMP icon at the top of the tools and see if Advanced>Window Settings has it locked to a certain position or anything.

I installed Mageia 2 as an upgrade using the Mageia updater. This was from Mageia 1, which was itself installed as an upgrade to Mandriva 2010.

I have no GIMP icon at the top of the tools, only at the top of the main GIMP window.

My tools window has "Toolbox" at the top, with the new fancy KDE 4.8 close button next to it which goes red when you hover over it. Below that there is a grey image of the GIMP eyes and nose, which says "Drop image files here to open them" when you hover over it, and below that the tools themselves.

Are you running compiz? Should be an icon in the top left of the tool box, like every window, with window options.

Compiz gives me all kinds of app problems. You you are running it turn it off.

Compiz is some 3D thing, yeah? If so, I shouldn't be.

Also
Code: Select all
[mark@fast ~]$ ps -e | grep compiz

yields nowt.

Just to confirm, you are on Mageia 2 with Gimp 2.8.0 and KDE 4.8?

Mageia 2, GIMP 2.8 and KDE 4.8.2.

You may have left over settings that are causing it.

Check Compiz...MCC>hardware>Config 3D desktop, set to none.

That makes my menus invisible, no titale bars at all and lots of other neat stuff that makes the computer a "Game" to use.

It is definitely set to "No 3D desktop effects" rather than "Compiz Fusion". compiz is not installed (asks me if I want to install it if I click the other radio button).

It sound like you have no title bar on your tools.

I picked 3D effects and installed compiz, and Gimp works. I then reverted to 2D, and it now doesn't work again. Guess I'm going to have to go for Single Window Mode, as 3D loses my desktop settings (great!).
