Settings Changed? on upgrade

Postby gbvoris » May 27th, '12, 21:00

The upgrade seems to have run smoothly. Until I clicked on the reboot button, now I am in KDE instead of Gnome and several things don't work right.
First the icons are gone from my desktop and when I try to set new ones they don't all work, I just tried Google Earth and it worked. The "HOME" icon which comes up when I copy it to the desktop does not work. It says it cannot find Dolphine. So I tried to go to control center to install it. The control center icon brings up the call for admn password; however the control center doesn't come up. Could these be the same problem?
And I can see the control center in recently used apps.

Maybe task-kde was missing from your system before the upgrade? Can you try to install it, if it's not installed already?

KDE was NOT there before, I was using Gnome, and I would try to install the file you say might be missing; but I cannot run control panel. I tried the fix in this forum, but I don't have any way to run the command urpmi. I need a consol in admin mode and sudo doesn't work. I think I'm part Gnome and part KDE. I don't see any way to get to the file system to see whats there

Rather than using sudo, in a terminal window (called Konsole in KDE), type
Code: Select all
su -
<enter your root password when prompted to>
urpmi task-kde

Alternatively, if you want to go back to GNOME, type
Code: Select all
urpmi task-gnome

Assuming this works, log out and at the login screen, change your session type to GNOME (or GNOME Classic if you don't like the new GNOME shell).

You can go to a terminal by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F2 - F6 and login there if you don't get a terminal otherwise, or you can even use failsafe mode from the boot manager, in the worst case.

Some better now, I can get to home. I left it on KDE for now, figured it was less change and I may as well try it; will I be able to switch back if I don't like KDE?
The only thing still bugging me is the icons. All of the ones from my desktop are gone, can they be recovered? Also on task bars within programs, like Firefox, many of the icons are white with a red X. Can this be fixed in KDE or are the carry overs from Gnome going to be around forever?
Thanks for the help so far, at least it is very usable now and I can deal with the X's if I haveto.

Sure, you can switch to any other desktop environment any time you want.

For the icons: Please show the output of
Code: Select all
ls -la ~/Desktop/
as your user in a terminal
For the "gnome leftovers", there shouldn't be any, but maybe you're better off with creating a new user and migrating your settings which you still need over there.

Sorry. i don't know what you mean by task icons. What about the output of the command i've posted?

Normally you can do a screenshot in KDE via the PrintScreen key, or by manually launching
Code: Select all
ksnapshot

When I do a screen shot I get it to the Home folder; however when I post it it is just file:///home/greg/Screen. I can open it and it reads fine, it saved as a .png.

Use the function below the forum editor to upload the screenshot as an attachment, you can't just drag&drop or try to copy it directly in the forum editor.

This should be it. The icons I'm refering to are like the one you use to add a tab or the one beside Herbs.
Maybe related maybe not, Firefox seemd to be unstable and takes a very long time to load some pages, like You tube. The scrolling functions ( using the arrow keys ) are weird, like there is some kind of a jesture language that has been added. That I can live with; but I would really like to know ahead of time that some of this is likely.

Those icons with the white icons are the favicons from the correspendent pages, which should get updated if you load all of them once.
But maybe you also need to clear your cache and check your firefox settings. For the cache -> settings -> advanced -> network -> clear now
and for the gesture -> settings -> advanced -> general and check what you have set there, automatic scrolling should be disabled.

If that doesn't do it for the scrolling, please describe exactly what you mean by weird. Otherwise, does scrolling with the mouse, mousewheel or touchpad work properly?

Those are all no upgrade issues at all, as we have the same firefox versions in both Mageia 1 and 2.

I don't believe that these are "update " problems, they were brought on by the update. Possibly the change of desktop?
Also the control center still doesn't work. I get the call for admin password and it drops off the screen but no control center.
The "favicons" are also like that for some programs.

You only have favicons in the browser, they are coming from the websites. Other programs have icons, but those come from your local disk, and are altogether a totally different thing. For the control center have a look at https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Mageia_2_Err ... conf_issue

Apart from that: please use one separate thread per topic.
