[SOLVED] - No more drivers in Mageia 2...?

Postby tkmm » May 23rd, '12, 07:34

I upgraded from Mageia 1 to Mageia 2 today and now my USB Wifi adapters don't work. My video card's driver was also changed. How can I rememdy this?

My wifi adapter is a Belkin F9L1001v1 with the Realtek 8192su chipset if I recall. Graphics card is nvidia GeForce 6150SE I think it was using the 6100 driver on Mageia 1.

The graphics card seemed to work well with the noveau(?) driver - which I believe is a generic driver.

My larger issue was with my USB wifi adapter's not working and being left 'net-less. I hastily reinstalled Mageia 1 as this is my 'production' system and will do more research and preparation before updating to Mageia 2.

No, I didn't run drakconnect or XFdrake. Instead I reinstalled Mageia 1. dmesg showed my USB wifi adpater and it showed up in the network center, but wouldn't work. I believe the error was firmware related. The adapter didn't show up under ifconfig either... I will have to do more research and update to Mageia 2 at a later date. Thank you for your response.

I downloaded the DVD and tried to install that way, which failed miserably. The install failed on me 4 times before I did an CLI upgrade following the Release Notes.

In order to get your video working again, and following the Errata, you can enter 'xdriver=nouveau' in grub when booting. This may or may not get you to a GUI but at least you should be able to get online (it should), but in my case (with an ATI Radeon card), I accessed CTRL-ALT-F1 after I got my GUI login screen, logged into the console and did an inline update following the instructions in the Release Notes (Upgrading online, using urpmi (CLI)). Remember that by default not all repositories are enabled. Once you are able to update your system (I had 2200 packages), reboot, log into the GUI, enable your "required" repositories, and update again. If necessary, download the package 'kernel-firmware-nonfree' on another machine and install this on this machine. That is what you need for your wifi to work. Also, make sure you install the 'x11-driver-video-nouveau' package. This will allow you to remove the 'xdriver=nouveau' from your grub entry.

In my case, I had a similar experience in Mageia 1 when I upgraded from Mandriva 2010.2 so I knew how to recover and get my system up and running. So far, I have a working system and am enjoying the new eye candy Mageia 2 has to offer.

My video card seemed to work ok with the noveau driver, it was my wifi that wouldn't work. Maybe I'll download the kernel-firmware-nonfree package first and then try 2 again. Thanks for the suggestion I will post results once I try the upgrade again.

Anyone know where I can find the kernel-firmware-nonfree package to download? I found it here and am curious if this should be trusted: http://pkgs.org/mageia-cauldron/mageia- ... /download/ ??

This time I performed the upgrade using the magaaplet(?) gui from Mageia 1. After the install - before rebooting - I used the RPMDrake to install the kernel-firmware-nonfree package and the current nvidia package for my card. The net works and the video card seems to be functioning. Thanks to all who were helpful!

PS. The load time takes significantly longer than Mageia 1 and as the first two or three bubbles appear over the cauldron my screen goes to black with a message of some sort about 'noveau' before stabilizing and finishing loading. Is this normal??
