Is Mageia a stable and bug free distro?

Postby icett » May 23rd, '12, 01:29

Hi everyone,

Mageia has become a famous distro within a very short time. I have seen Mageia climb to the 6th position at the distrowatch website rankings. I have used Ubuntu and Linux Mint but find them quite buggy. I would like to know how stable and bug free Mageia is. Kindly inform. :)

Mageia 1 was very stable. :)
And surely Mageia 2 will be even better ... ;)

No distro is bug free and Mageia is no exception. But if you want to find out why people like Mageia so much try taking the newly released Mageia 2 out for a test drive.
You can grab a Live CD at http://www.mageia.org/en/downloads/

I've only started to use Mageia very recently - and I haven't encountered any bugs or issue's so far, which is great !

As djennings said, give Mageia a test drive and see - I was distro hoping quite a lot before using Mageia.

I replaced Mandriva with Mageia 1 when it first came out and I was amazed at how free of bugs it has been. It is a quantum leap over my previous Mandriva experience going back to 1999. I have found it to be EXTREMELY stable. AND, I just upgraded via the Internet to Mageia 2 and that went ALMOST flawlessly. The ONLY problem I had was with my quirky non-standard Grub setup, but that was not Mageia's fault at all. Other than that, I started the upgrade Thursday night, walked away from it and went to bed and had a bug free functioning Mageia 2 system when I awoke Friday morning. That is an experience I have never had before in my life with ANY OS. - George

First: no distro is bug free, that's a fact and unavoidable in practice. A nice saying goes: "If you can't find a bug in your software, try again!"

As somebody who has been using a lot of distros (and still does) I think Mageia is not old enough to compare it with others of the BIG ONES for this question.

Mageia 1 had the advantage that it mostly consisted of packages ported from Mandriva - of course the people who ported the system only selected packages that had already been checked for bugs before and did not port packages which had an unresolved bug. This resulted in a distro with as few bugs as possible - the hard work by the makers of Mageia did the rest. Let Mageia grow as "old" as other distros and we will see how "bug free" it will be in 3 or 4 years. Then it makes sense to compare in a fair way.

Yes, Mageia is stable and it has less bugs than many other distributions. But how "bug free" Mageia will stay in future depends not only on the good job the developers and packagers of Mageia but also on the quantity of manpower we will have for QA. Join the QA team, participate in testing and give usable feeback to help resolving bugs - this way we will continuously improve Mageia's standing in the "bug free" ranking :)

Look, I moved away from Windows as a primary box 10 years ago since I was just completely fedup with the consistent unreliability of the OS and the fact that it needed reinstalls at least twice a year to keep it workable. For me, Linux was a vast improvement and although there are many bugs, there is usually also 10 different quick ways to tackle the problem of which one usually works. And my Linux box never broke itself and got slower and slower until it ground to halt. Never. Cold Restarts? Once every few weeks perhaps. No virusses ever since.

I found Mageia 1 to be a great distro, especially since it was a first try. Yes, it had one nasty problem on my side as I could not get my Xerox printer totally happy with any driver and I was a bit stuck with it, but eventually when the 4 year old printer needed a cartridge, I rather bought a new HP 6500A and it works like a charm.

I am now busy testing Mageia 2 and I must say, at the moment it looks to me like a significant improvement.

Nice to hear, and a big compliment to all Mageia contributors ;)

Mageia is as near bug-free as any distro I've seen. No distro is completely bug free.

Debin stable is stable but then again old software from 2 years old is the drawback
