Difference between boot.iso and boot-nonfree.iso

Although I have an idea of the difference between
these two installing tools could someone point
me to a description/advantages of one vs the other.

boot-nonfree.iso did not exist in Mageia 1.

The boot-nonfree.iso includes non-free software/firmware required by certain network devices. If you have a device that requires such firmware/software then you should use the boot-nonfree.iso. If your network device is fully supported by a FOSS driver, then you can use the regular boot.iso.

Please keep in mind that boot-nonfree.iso is not intented to support installation via encrypted wi-fi, this will not work and will require manual setup outside of the installer.

Do note that my interest in this is not so much the WiFi but
the potential to pick up some older/odd hardware. Which is
what I think it's all about. In all my years with Mandrake/Mandriva
and now Mageia I don't think I've ever done a WiFi install.
First install is always hard connect LAN and usually to
a local repo.

FWIW some years ago I was faced with a brand new IBM
touch screen display ( lets call it a cash register ). It
was so new that IBM had yet to create a "driver" for
WinBlows XP. But Mandriva loaded in just fine and
we were able to get the touch screen to work. Took
that thing to a Trade Show and showed it in the IBM
booth. Blew IBM away as they only had a nonworking
unit in their display.
