Skype crashes mageia 2b3

Postby ethancello » Apr 28th, '12, 16:01

Hi,

I have Skype up and running on my x64 2b3 gnome3 system. If video is on, the whole OS crashes. Not immidiately, and not based at any specific time, but eventually, given enought time (10-15 minutes) all of mageia goes unresponsive, no cursor movement, no hot key, nothing.

Will this be fixed by the stable release? Is there a fix now?

Thanks

You know that Skype is closed-source, proprietary software? There's nothing we can change about Skype itself, and i don't think Microsoft has much interest in doing development/support beyong the current beta status of Skype for linux. What you can do is to try to directly start Skype, in a terminal via:
Code: Select all
/usr/share/skype/skype

Does the problem still persist?

If yes, what webcam and what driver are you using, please show the output of
Code: Select all
lspcidrake -v | grep -i -e video -e webcam
Cauldron is not for the faint of heart!
Caution: Hot, bubbling magic inside. May explode or cook your kittens!

ethancello, I had a similar issue with Mageia 1. I had noticed that my system freezed when the size of the video window was resized in order to have a high definition resolution. That's a known bug and the only solution I had found was setting the window size to specific dimensions in a configuration file. I haven't tried skype in Mageia 2 and also I don't know If you suffer exactly the same problem.

My webcam is working fine. Also, if it was a problem specifically with the skype code, it would have the same problem with Skype on other distros (which I haven't had)

The weird thing is that it isn't right after any action, it is after Skype is running for a long time and so has the video. E.g. I will have a video chat going and ten minutes later my OS crashes. I will try running Skype from the terminal (I use terminator) and when it crashes, it will hopefully only crash the terminal.

Hi,
I have the same problem. If I use Skype with video, the whole OS crashes. I hoped it will be resolved in Beta 3 but it is not. :(
I am using nVidia in Lenovo W510.
Otherwise mageia is a good piece of software.

Describe "crash".
System freezes requires hard ( power cycle ) reboot????
ctrl-alt-f2 terminal log-in as root and reboot ok???
skype works ok without video????
I assume you are using a webcam for video????
"DISK BOOT FAILURE - INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER"
is my friend

When I say crashes I mean the os goes unresponsive and freezes such that the mouse does not move and nothing can open or close. The way to take it down is it requires a hard reboot.

I had this type of crash with the plasma-applet "webcamoid" and when trying to configue video for the instant messenger "Kopete". I found this link at the Arch forums: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=808188. Setting the uvcvideo driver option "nodrop=1" worked for me. I installed skype and could see myself in the video test. Then I removed the uvcvideo option and the skype video test brought my desktop to a halt (pointer could move but couldn't "do" anything) and needed Alt+SysRq+reisub to restart. I put the uvcvideo driver option back and skype was fine again. This can be done in Mageia by opening the Mageia Control Center, clicking Hardware, then "Browse and configure hardware", then the arrow by "webcam". Click on the name of your webcam, then on the right side, click "Set current driver options". In the "nodrop" field put the number 1. After closing out the Control Center you can either reboot or do as root in a terminal first
Code: Select all
rmmod uvcvideo
then
Code: Select all
modprobe uvcvideo

It's worth a try.

Just try to run skype like this:
Code: Select all
/usr/share/skype/skype

Does it still crash?

I found a solution to FIX it.
in /etc/modprobe.conf put this line:
options uvcvideo nodrop=1

than in terminal as root:

rmmod uvcvideo

and

modprobe uvcvideo

It is all. It works!!!! :)

Thank You maskimummu
