Good news. This thread is a perfect example of how uninstalling orphan packages can cause unexpected consequences. Glad you got to the bottom of it.

Yes, definitely! And it renders the often-quoted advice ("use 'urpme --auto-orphans' only if you know what you are doing!") as next to "Do not use it!" because it takes a lot of knowledge to actually "know what you are doing" in this context. I've been using Linux for almost 17 years, Mandrake/Mandriva since it's birth - but I don't claim to be able to detect all the consequences of each and every "orphan" in a list of 100+x packages (not mentioning the time it would take to find out). IMHO this whole "orphan" display causes more trouble than benefits.

Yes, I had a problem with something else recently, and the problem linked back to when I one time used the urpme --auto-orrphans feature. Don't worry, I don't plan on using it again any time soon because I clearly don't know enough about the packages on that list.

My suggestion would be for the Mageia staff to remove the message that prods you to use the --auto-orphans feature every time you use urpme.

Thanks.

It has already been changed in MGA2 Cauldron. The orphans are still listed but the commandline command is not given. People who do not know the command to use will ask in the forum and automagically be presented with the orphan issue. :) From that point on it is the user's own decision.

OTOH for a newbie destroying a system is a positive experience, he will have the chance to practice installation.

liblame0 is in the repository named "tainted"

Goto Mageia ControlCenter -> Packages management -> Configure your sources -> activate tainted release and tainted updates -> OK

then again urpmi liblame0

Thanks for that, Maat. was able to install liblame0.

However, the original problem I had with K3B not being able to rip to MP3 is still with me. Any ideas?

No MP3 option to rip CDs using K3B

Postby SAlineBoy » Jun 7th, '12, 12:54

Have tried without success to rip cd's using K3B. Loads of options for different formats, except no MP3. I have Liblame0 installed, could someone please tell me where I'm going wrong and what else I need to do to rip to mp3.

OGG and other formats are of no use to me, as my IPOD can't read this format.

Regards

K3B is a cd burning tool

You have specific tools to rip into .ogg or .flac (or even mp3): grip sound-juicer goobox soundconverter...

You may have to do this as a two-step processconvert to OGG then in another program convert from OGG to MP3, but personally I use Grip for my ripping needs and it can convert directly to MP3.

K3B also offers the option of CD ripping, there are lots of different formats if supports, however, I cannot seem to get it to rip in MP3. This is what I want to know

I created the additional topic as this one seems to be marked Solved and you appear to be the only one looking at it. I think I stand a better chance to getting more answers if you had left them unmerged?

.......uninstalled lame, liblame, and gstreamer. Uninstalled K3B.
Reinstalled Lame, Liblame and gstreamer, and K3B. Turned pc off, went for a cup of tea, turned pc back on, and I was then finally able to see the MP3lame option in K3B. I have sucessfully ripped a few cd's to the pc and all work perfectly. I really do not like MP3, and would rather go with ogg or flac, which I am told give better sound reproduction, but as I use my IPOD in the car etc, and all my collection is on it, I need MP3.
Cheers
