[SOLVED] K3B rip to MP3 or OGG

Postby lewisforlife » Apr 30th, '12, 22:45

I would like to use K3b to make backups of my cd collection. Currently when I go to Tools->rip audio cd, then click the "start ripping" button, I only have an option to rip to wave. Does anyone know how to add other formats. I have lame installed, but I can't find an option in k3b to enable other file formats. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

It works for me.
I have installed from tainted repository
lame
lib64lame0 (for 64 bit linux)
gstreamer0.10-lame

There are no settings in k3b to enable mp3. The option will just appear if you have the correct libraries installed.

K3b offered to rip to ogg 'out of the box'. I did not have to install anything.
You may find installing sox gives you more ripping options.

This is so weird, I have the tainted repo enabled. I have a 32 bit system, and have these packages installed:

k3b - of course
lame
gstreamer0-.10-lame
sox

The only thing that shows up in my list is wave. If anyone has any suggestions I would be much appreciative.

K3b hasn't the ability to encode to mp3/ogg while ripping. If you'd like to rip and encode at once use grip.

You are saying that k3b can rip and encode? I wonder why mine doesn't have any options besides wave?

If you look in k3b>Settings>Configure>Programmes do you see all the helper applications ticked?

Also do you have task-kde4 installed? If you are not running KDE and installed k3b separately I wonder if you are missing some required library.

BTW: My k3b offers to rip audio CDs into all sorts of different formats 22 of them!

There are a bunch of programs in there, lame and gstreamer are not on that list, are they supposed to be?

Interestingly enough, task-kde4 was not installed. I think it is because I did "urpme --auto-orphans" (don't worry, I have since read about this, and will only cautiously use it in the future). I installed task-kde4, uninstalled k3b, and reinstalled k3b, but I still don't have the encode options to rip to mp3 etc...

Without lame installed you can't encode mp3. The installed encoders/decoders appear not among the programs but among modules, have a look there.

I cannot find anything that says modules, where should I look for this? Thanks.

There is nothing listed under the plugins actually. there is a box to search for plugins, but when I type something in, like "lame" and hit enter, the box just goes away. Which plugins are supposed to be in there?

FWIW, it should look something like this:

This is weird, I have most of the plugins installed that you have, but none of them show up in my list of plugins.

If anyone knows how to add them, please let me know. If not, no big deal, I am going to install Mageia 2 soon, maybe the problem will just "resolve itself" then.

Can you please rephrase, i don't understand what you mean? Are you talking about plugins installed via package management vs. the list of plugins in k3b?

And please tell which formats you want to encode, so we can get you a working solution sooner.

The plugins I am talking about I installed with urpmi, these include:

lame
liblame0
gstreamer0.10-lame
ffmpeg
sox

They are not showing up in k3b however. The plugins section in k3b is completely empty.

I would like to encode in mp3 and ogg. Wave is the only thing that shows up on my list. Thanks.

Well, the only real "plugin" by definition from your list would probably be gstreamer0.10-lame, the others are encoders/programs and one library (liblame0).
FWIW, for MP3 encoding, you'd need liblame (or lib64lame on an x86_64 system) and for ogg it's the same. That's what i have installed.

Code: Select all
[david@localhost ~]$ urpmq liblame -a
liblame-devel
liblame-devel
liblame-static-devel
liblame0
liblame0
[david@localhost ~]$

I see nothing that says simply "liblame". I have the tainted repo enabled as well as nonfree.

Now that is odd. The k3b plugins are part of the Mageia k3b package. They can be found in your file system
Code: Select all
/usr/lib64/kde4/k3baudiometainforenamerplugin.so
/usr/lib64/kde4/k3baudioprojectcddbplugin.so
/usr/lib64/kde4/k3bexternalencoder.so
/usr/lib64/kde4/k3bffmpegdecoder.so
/usr/lib64/kde4/k3bflacdecoder.so
/usr/lib64/kde4/k3blibsndfiledecoder.so
/usr/lib64/kde4/k3bmaddecoder.so
/usr/lib64/kde4/k3bmpcdecoder.so
/usr/lib64/kde4/k3boggvorbisdecoder.so
/usr/lib64/kde4/k3boggvorbisencoder.so
/usr/lib64/kde4/k3bsoxencoder.so
/usr/lib64/kde4/k3bwavedecoder.so
/usr/lib64/kde4/kcm_k3bexternalencoder.so
/usr/lib64/kde4/kcm_k3boggvorbisencoder.so
/usr/lib64/kde4/kcm_k3bsetup.so
/usr/lib64/kde4/kcm_k3bsoxencoder.so
/usr/lib64/kde4/kio_videodvd.so
/usr/lib64/kde4/libexec/k3bsetuphelper

Mine is 64 bit. For 32 bit look in /usr/lib

Are you using k3b from the Mageia repository? It should be k3b-2.0.2-3.mga1

Try uninstalling k3b and installing it again.

I am using the one from the Mageia repo (k3b-2.0.2-3.mga1.i586).

I uninstalled and reinstalled. Here are the files that I have in /usr/lib/kde4:

Code: Select all
k3baudiometainforenamerplugin.so*
k3baudioprojectcddbplugin.so*
k3bexternalencoder.so*
k3bffmpegdecoder.so*
k3bflacdecoder.so*
k3blibsndfiledecoder.so*
k3bmaddecoder.so*
k3bmpcdecoder.so*
k3boggvorbisdecoder.so*
k3boggvorbisencoder.so*
k3bsoxencoder.so*
k3bwavedecoder.so*
kcm_k3bexternalencoder.so*
kcm_k3boggvorbisencoder.so*
kcm_k3bsetup.so*
kcm_k3bsoxencoder.so*

kio_videodvd.so*

k3bsetuphelper*

AFAIK those plugins are only responsible for interacting with the real encoders/libaries, you still need those encoders/libraries.

@lewisforlife: Just try to do the following as root:
Code: Select all
urpmi liblame0 libogg0

Then launch k3b, does it now detect ogg and mp3 encoders? Maybe you need to click "search" in the lower right hand to refresh that screen.

I already have these installed:

Code: Select all
[user@localhost ~]$ sudo urpmi liblame0 libogg0
[sudo] password for user:
Packages libogg0-1.2.2-1.mga1.i586, liblame0-3.98.4-2.mga1.i586 are already installed
Marking libogg0 as manually installed, it won't be auto-orphaned
writing /var/lib/rpm/installed-through-deps.list

Good news folks. I was having a similar problem with okular that this user was having here: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2136

I followed the instructions, and not only is my okular working now, but I have the plugins for k3b now also. I guess "kdelibs4-core" was the culprit.

Thanks.
