[SOLVED] Digikam

[SOLVED] Digikam

Postby Garthhh » Apr 13th, '12, 02:19

in my acclimation to KDE world, I had been using gwenview, but need just a few more features & GV seems to crash quite a bit

Digikam is certainly a bit more resource intensive
like everything in KDE world can be customized quite a bit
when I add text [decorate] & save I get a nag screen telling me

You do not have write permissions for the file named "2012-04-09_20-25-45 1.jpg
I can click Overwrite & it works
how can I get rid of this nagscreen?

Could you please rephrase what you're doing and be a bit more clear?
Also where do you save that file, or from where do you open it, what filesystem and so on?

BTW here gwenview has never crashed for me ...

I have 10000 or so pictures [jpg] files in the normal place, the pictures folder in dolphin, there are 36 folders within the pics folder, my personal organization system, some may have sub folders nested within

so I open Digikam & navigate to a individual file, open that file with the image editor, click decorate, type some text, click ok
which takes me back to the image editor, in order for this to become permanent I click save
the header on the nag box reads
overwrite file?-Digikam
text reads
You do not have write permissions for the file named "2012-03-22_23-12-39.jpg". Are you sure you want to overwrite it?

I'm trying to minimize the mouse clicks or the need to switch between keyboard & mouse
there is no dedicated digikam section on the kde forum or digikam forum
so I started here
I'd post a screenshot, but picasa/G+ webalbums seem to be somewhat broken at the moment
if I go to the file & check the permissions, totally wide open anyone can read or write

I tried the procedure under KDE and it works just fine.
Using Mageia 5 KDE 32bit on an Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600, Asus P5K-E, XFX GeForce 8800 GTS 512mb, 4096 MB ram

Yes, the procedure does work fine
I'm trying to remove the superfluous step of accepting the overwriting of the file

Please show the output of
Code: Select all
ls -la
for a file which you have already modified and which exhibited the problem and for one which you plan to modify.

About more features (asked first line first post) ; i use Showfoto. My wife use Gimp.
I browse using Gwenview, then open for edit in Showfoto. Neither have ever crashed for me.
I have read about photographer using rawtherapee, and i will try out darktable http://www.darktable.org/about/
At home & work Mandriva since 2006, Mageia 2011. Thinkpad T40, T43, T60, T400, T510, Dell M4400, M6300, Acer Aspire 7. Workstation using LVM, LUKS, VirtualBox, BOINC

the more features are being able to do minor brightness/color adjusts, the occasional bit of text

the learning curve on gimp is fairly steep [I've played from time to time]
digikam seems to be fairly userfriendly & come with the base mageia kde build
the downside is no dedicated section on the kde forum, I'm not in a hurry to be on a dev's mailing list for support
I'm being hampered by this machine being only single core & 1g of ram

If you actually remember a file that gave you a problem use kfind. Type the name of the file and tell it to search. When it finds it it will show the path. something like /home/garthhh/photos/

how do I get the path to display in a form I can copy
I can add a column in dolphin, but it's greyed out :x
any file I pick with digikam exhibits the same behavior, so it's not a bug or a problem file

Either in the right-hand (small) panel, the button at the top "Properties" or via the menu bar -> Album -> Open in Filemanager, for example.

I went to dolphin highlighted a file>tools>open terminal
which gets me to a folder, but not an individual file
Partial output is:
drwxrwxrwx 19 garlo garlo 24576 Apr 13 15:10 ./
drwxrwxrwx 40 garlo garlo 20480 Apr 17 06:20 ../

if I open the file gwenviewer opens it, no idea how to extract the full path or how to navigate from a terminal to an individual file, short of writing it down on paper & typing it in?
what am I missing?

Do you see the difference? This clearly shows that for the first three files (first quote block) your user and group has read and write access, for all the files in the second quote block you only have read access. You could easily fix this by doing something like
Code: Select all
chmod -R 644 ./
in that folder or
Code: Select all
chmod -R 644 /path/to/your/images
(/path/to/your/images obviously must be replaced by the correct path on your box) if you want to adjust the permissions on all your images in one go.

BTW: I had told you to open file manager or look intop the file properties, not to launch a terminal, otherwise you would already know the path to your images or could have fixed the permissions from the file manager more easily than by entering some commands. But if you don't do what is suggested i can't help you properly.

ok you asked me to give the output of this, which looks like commands on a terminal?
then when I do you tell me I'm not doing it right? I should be in dolphin

I guess the real issue is why am I getting files with limited permissions, I've just been importing with GV or digikam, [I don't see any settings on either that would control import behavior]
I don't want anything to have limited permissions, [the rare exceptions will be set manually]
when I look at msec on mcc, everything has root permission
what else would control permissions at import or how else would permissions be limited?

Well, i asked you before, you told that you don't know how to find out the file path, so i gave you easier instructions to open either the file manager from within digikam, or to copy the full path from the file's properties. But seems you didn't read the latter. But anyways, doesn't matter now that you provided the necessary information.

About the limited permissions, i don't know. i'd need more context information, like what are the permissions for the files when they're still on the camera.
Normally the file permissions are only controlled by the permissions from the folder which those files are inserted in, because they will be inherited.
Also normally this has nothing to do with msec, and i also don't know what root permissions you're talking about in msec.

it's some sort of issue with the digikam importer & limited permissions
stuff I bring on board with GV are RW
the camera [fuji finepix s2950] opens a folder dcim 101 when connected

Well, i also import via digikam, and there are no limited permissions. Maybe you could verify some file permissions on the camera?

found the problem, I was mistaken about the origin of the files they were imported by dolphin, my wife was having trouble, on file was corrupted, a panorama where the camera was turned off before saving & GV digikam were getting stuck, when I got here to sit down & look she told me what really happened
DK does a fine job all around & is quite a bit more intuitive than Gimp
