E17 version

Postby RAIDENSUB » Oct 28th, '11, 10:36

Hi to all. I think that it would be nice to see E17 version of mageia. E17 is mush more stable now. I was using Pclinuxos with custom E17 and no problems. I am using Mageia 1 with E17 and i liked very much but the problem is that the version in the repos is old and missing some nice stuff. I don't know if the Cauldron repos have a newer version.

Checked in Cauldron:

task-e17
Version: 1-3.mga1

Which means no difference with Mageia-1.

@isadora: task-... are only meta-packages, meaning they contain themselves no files or anything,
they are only there to easily install all dependencies needed for that task. The version of that does not
say anything about the versions of the actual packages that get installed. So this can be actually
the same version as in cauldron, but the dependent packages will be different.

Yes E17 is a bit older, but those are the latest stable releases until now.
In Cauldron we're trying to update all E17 packages. But it's currently
under discussion what will happen with Mageia E17 packages in the upcoming
release, either we keep those stable (but pretty outdated) releases
or we will drop the whole E17 as it doesn't get along with our quality requirements
and our updates policy.

Thanks for that doktor5000, and my apologies to RAIDENSUB for giving wrong information.

Please don't drop E17.

Bodhi Linux

http://www.bodhilinux.com

is the proof that E17 can be stable, its just needs some effort to build . Bodhi is using E17 build from svn and it is stable in my tests. And Pclinuxos with E17 was very stable. Maybe if developers present Mageia livecd from the start of the Mageia 2 development for the users to test we could make a quality release.

No apologies needed Isadora.

Sorry for my English.

Stabilizing a development version, or even worse, a rolling release, like E17, and supporting something for the lifetime of a distro release,
and adhering to our updates policy http://mageia.org/wiki/doku.php?id=updates_policy are two objectives in opposite directions, sorry.

OK! , but note that E, although this in beta, is more stable than some of DE, in the final version.

It's just a clarification.

Sure, i know, no need to tell me. But as we're a community distro, there are many people giving their opinion,
and as we want primarily stability and a well-maintained distro, this has some drawbacks on more bleeding-edge software projects like E.

But feel free to join the packaging team https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Becoming_a_Mageia_Packager to help
with keeping E17 up to date, or maybe you want to help adapting easy-e17.sh to Mageia, so enthusiast Mageia users
who want E, can update it when they want.

If you have more questions/issues/proposals for E, just ping me.

As you also asked for stuff about artwork, also have a look at https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Artwork_team
and http://www.mageia.org/en/about/media/ and http://www.flickr.com/groups/mageia-artwork/ or http://www.flickr.com/groups/Mageia-2-artwork
Artwork team is currently quite short on members, and they'll surely appreciate any help they can get
with upcoming Mageia 2 artwork.
