[SOLVED] How do I make VLC the default player for mwv files

Postby Canuck » Feb 25th, '12, 21:39

When I click on an .mwv file link in Thunderbird, I get "Movie Player" as the default player. It does not play mwv files. How can I change this 'default' to VLC?

In the "Open With" dialog you can click on the dropdown list with Movie Player, and select a custom one,
you will get a filepicker dialog, just navigate to /usr/bin/vlc and select it, that should do it.

Click on the 'System Settings' icon in your task bar (screwdriver X wrench). Click on 'File Associations' icon in the top section (Common Appearance and Behavior). In the 'Find File Type or Filename Pattern' search box, type .mwv, (or do you mean .wmv?) and move VLC up in the Preference Order so it is the first one in the list and save.

'sglafata' I believe that your reference to a System Settings icon is for a KDE desktop. I do not see such an icon on my Gnome desktop.

Yes, doktor 5000, the solution you posted worked perfectly and that is why I marked the thread [SOLVED]. The posting involving the Systems Settings icon came later. Because I could not find the icon or any 'file association' program, I simply stopped looking. I do recall on a Slackware based distro, there was also a program to 'associate' the a player with specific files. Thanks for the solution and for the follow-up.
