[SOLVED] MySQL root password

Postby esteban1972 » Jan 20th, '12, 18:12

Hi,

I'm giving Mageia a second chance (I really loved Mandriva 2010.2 and 2011) but I'm having some problems. I'm a web programmer and I need to set a LAMP server on my Mageia box. The problem that I noticed today is that even if I type the command:

mysqladmin -u root password NEWPASSWORD

I can log into mysql just typing:

mysql or mysql -u root

Only if I type

mysql -u root -p

it asks for a password. What can be wrong? I check the user database and noticed that there were 4 records for user root, three with the empty password. I deleted them and only keep the record for root at localhost. I really want to try Mageia, given the problems with Mandriva, but it is far behind 2010.2. :-(

Solved the problem! I have to log into mysql and type:

flush privileges;
exit;

The next time I try to log it will ask for a password, as it should be.

Why a second chance? And why is Mageia far behind Mandriva 2010.2, would be nice from you to explain that.

Maybe I picked the wrong words. I'm a Mandrake/Mandriva user since 2004 and I always loved the details on the user experience, the look & feel. I tested Mageia the same week it was released expecting something different to 2010.2, which, by the way, was the best release of Mandriva. But Mageia was the the same and, in my humble opinion, as long as it looks like 2010.2 it will lack of identity. I don't know how to explain myself, but that is what I feel. I installed Mandriva 2011 and it was something different, hard to adapt the first days but I finally loved it. Those guys from Russia, the ones from Rosa Labs, make a really cool work with the look & feel.

Maybe I was expecting something different from Mageia. Maybe I'm judging Mageia from the Mandriva 2011 point of view, and I know it's a mistake. I'm gonna keep one desktop PC with Mageia and will start using it more. I want to help in the future. I'm a web designer and maybe I can help a little with some graphics work. I will download the latest alpha today and start testing.

Great! I will contact them. I want to work on the images that appear while you're installing the system. One more question. One big mistake of Mandriva is that it lacks of marketing and PR. In a connected society you cant afford to post once in a month in your blog or send a tweet every two months. Take for example Ubuntu. You know what is happening thru their Twitter account and there is OMGUbuntu that helps a lot promoting and helping. Do you have any idea what is Mageia's guideline or plans about the issue?

I tend to agree marketing is a big part of any successful distro. Maybe you could join the marketing team list to discuss some ideas?
