[SOLVED] problems installing mageia alpha 2

Postby bigdavesr » Jan 8th, '12, 05:46

I have been able to install mageia2 alpha 2 up to the point of setting up users and adninistration with no problem. However the user setup fails to install. It only allows me to boot into gnome desktop as guest or live with no admintistration privlageses. How can I set up adm. and user now that it has been installed.I have reburned iso 4 times and clean installed four times with same results. I have searched the release notes and bus and have not found anything on this problem.Any help would be appreciated. thanks

There is an issue with the Gnome M2A2 live iso. It will work fine with the DVD or KDE live cd (worked for me anyway)

I reported this issue in a post here

Do you have a flash drive? I made a guide of making a live USB from windows 7

viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1629

for the DVD version Linux Live is what I use.
http://www.linuxliveusb.com/en/download

Though the guide will work for the DVD version as well

For all Mageia installation isos, here's the guide in our wiki: https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Installation ... B_stick.3F

Nothing there helps him if he is using Windows 7. If he is using XP then Linux Live or YUMI is the best way and if he has access to Linux then dd is the best way. But if he is using Windows 7 then my guide is the best way. (for a live ISO) if for the DVD ISO than Linux Live or YUMI is still the way to go. DD for windows isn't very good compared to the Linux version.

True lol. But we have to assume from all angles. Most computer users have access to XP or Windows 7

Seriously? You don't have some spare usb stick or sd card available? How did you get Mint, Suse or Mageia 2 Alpha 2 installed in the first place?

dd is a standard unix utility: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dd_%28Unix%29
For the information how to use it to transfer and installation image: https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Installation ... B_stick.3F as already pointed out above.

He has a cd drive but not a dvd drive (am I correct?)

You could burn the KDE version to a cd install it then use the

Code: Select all
su
"your password"
urpmi task-gnome

reboot into the gnome desktop

then

Code: Select all
su
"your password"
urpme task-kde

But it shouldnt be to much longer before the Alpha 3 iso is released

Why not use Mageia 1 and update to Mageia 2 or just stay with Mageia 1 until Mageia Alpha 3?

If you install Mageia 1 you can use the instructions here to upgrade
https://wiki.mageia.org/en/QA_process_f ... g_upgrades

I recently picked up a 16BG USB flash drive for under $20 and have seen 8GB drives which are big enough for an install iso for under $10.
The plus side of a flash drive is that it can over written 100's of times. It's hard to find a 100 pack of CD's let alone DVD's for anywhere near that price.

Why not do a network install?
Download the boot.iso image from a mirror.
After booting tell it you want to do an ftp install of cauldron
You will get the very latest Alpha3+ installation and can install whatever desktop you please.
ftp://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/linux/Mageia/distrib/cauldron/i586/install/images

Putting the all.img on a USB Flash with dd will give you the same network install.

Yeah, that totally slipped my mind. That would probably be the best way (though not the fastest) to do it. But I dont believe that would give him Alpha 3? Alpha 3 isn't even finished for the testers yet.

If you install cauldron, it's always more recent than latest development release,
because the internal mirror from which the development release is built from, is frozen a few days before the release gets built.

The only problem with installing Cauldron with a network install is that Cauldron changes so frequently packages can get updated on the server while you are part way through the install causing the install to fail.
