Input/output error

Postby stevofromftw » Dec 28th, '11, 03:06

Why cant I copy files bigger than 2 gig from a usb stick to a directory on a hard drive?
My system doesn't seam to be able to copy large files from usb sticks.
my laptop has no problem doing it so I don't think the file is corrupt or the usb stick faulty.
It fails at 2 Gib everytime.
Ive tried with Dolphin, Konqueror and from konsole and as root from console.

I was trying
cp -a

Exactl what does it do? Give an error at the start? Start copying and stop at a certain %, Copy in an infinite loop? A few more details may help. Have you tried with a different kernel?

Maybe a faulty usb stick? If there's no important data on it, try to format it and check for badblocks in the process and try again. Check the man-page of mkdosfs to see how to do it.

What is the file system type you are copying to?
If it is fat16 for example it is limited to 2GB per file
