Hi everyone,
I just installed mageia1 to my home pc. The mouse pointer flickers when passing over menu items, etc. Is there anything I can do about this? Also, when I go to install apps, it prompts me to insert the DVD I used for installation. Is this always necessary?

As for the second point: yes, until you remove the entry for the DVD from the media list. Go to Mageia Control center -> Configure your software package sources (or similar, I run German version). Mark the top entry which says something like cdrom or dvd and click on the remove button. Click on "OK".

About the mouse flickering; it happened to me also but the issue disappeared after installing the proprietary video driver.

I spent this morning downloading the various updates (more than 600 files..) hoping that a reboot afterwards would have solved the problem. But it didn't.

I'll try to see if there's a video driver available. With other distros this hasn't happened though..

Is 1.5GB of RAM enough for this distro? Perhaps that's the problem..?

Well, I've been trying different things, including your suggestion here ^^^ but no luck.

It's not that a flickering mouse pointer bothers me that much. It's just that I have a feeling that other "surprises" might be in store for me later on.. Hopefully not. I'd like to think that there's some file somewhere that will fix it. Everything else seems to work fine, no complaints, nice install. (Not all distros install so smoothly!)

Openchrome is your driver currently - well one thing you could try is switch to a more generic driver like vesa.
To do that, in MCC -> Hardware -> Set up the graphical server -> Graphic Card -> Xorg -> vesa
The only disadvantage is that this doesn't offer any hardware-acceleration which your current driver maybe offers.

Or you could try to disable hardware cursor drawing for your current driver, which seems a better solution.
Check via MCC -> Hardware -> Set up the graphical server -> Options if you can disable there the usage
of hardware accelerated mouse pointer, that should do it. Don't forget to logout/login afterwards for the changes to take effect.

Thank you for your help, doktor5000. I probably need a better graphics card for this unit in order to eliminate the problem fully. But at least I have a couple of options.
