[SOLVED] Mageia software packages update is somehow broken

Postby dude67 » Dec 5th, '11, 10:56

I'm having serious problems with software packages update. It tells me I have packages to update. When I select them, it tells me on several packages that this-and-that has to be removed for others to be upgraded. Then I cannot update anything!I Now these packages to be removed change depending on the package I'm trying to update. I haven't been able to update my Mageia1 in several weeks now.

I'm using Mageia1 on my laptop (ACER Aspire 7530) and the current kernel is 2.6.38.8-server-6.mga

I've taken a few screenshots. The first set is for all the package updates and the latter half is trying to update only Firefox.

Please open up a terminal, and post here the output of the following commands as root:
Code: Select all
urpmq --list-media active

Code: Select all
urpmi --update --auto-select --test
Cauldron is not for the faint of heart!
Caution: Hot, bubbling magic inside. May explode or cook your kittens!

Please disable all Backports, Debug and testing repositories and try this again. You can do so via:
Code: Select all
urpmi.update --ignore backports
urpmi.update --ignore debug
urpmi.update --ignore testing

as root in a terminal

OK, did that. Now it's only these sources left:
Code: Select all
# urpmq --list-media active
Core Release (distrib1)
Core Updates (distrib3)
Nonfree Release (distrib11)
Nonfree Updates (distrib13)
Tainted Release (distrib21)
Tainted Updates (distrib23)

Still no help.
Code: Select all
# urpmi --update --auto-select --test

You should use another mirror, one that is reliable and synchronizes often. So i suggest to do the following:
Remove all currently configured repostories:
Code: Select all
urpmi.removemedia -a

Add back all repositories from a reliable mirror:
Code: Select all
urpmi.addmedia --distrib ftp://ftp.mandrivauser.de/mirrors/Mageia/distrib/1/i586

Maybe you need to reenable Tainted and/or Nonfree repositories, you can do so from Mageia control center.

Then try again, it should work normally then without errors. If it doesn't, please report back.

Please try
Code: Select all
urpmi --auto-select --replacepkgs
and post the output if it fails.
Seems you already installed some updates, but seems they are not the final proper ones,
that could be because you had the _testing and _backport repositories enabled yourself before.

What I got was this:
Code: Select all
# urpmi --auto-select --replacepkgs
Packages are up to date
writing /var/lib/rpm/installed-through-deps.list

The following packages:
  google-gadgets-common-0.11.2-5.mga1.i586
  google-gadgets-qt-0.11.2-5.mga1.i586
  kdebase4-workspace-googlegadgets-4.6.5-1.3.mga1.i586

  kernel-server-devel-2.6.38.8-4.mga-1-1.mga1.i586
  libggadget-dbus1.0_0-0.11.2-5.mga1.i586
  libggadget-js1.0_0-0.11.2-5.mga1.i586
  libggadget-qt1.0_0-0.11.2-5.mga1.i586
  libggadget-webkitjs0-0.11.2-5.mga1.i586
  libggadget-xdg1.0_0-0.11.2-5.mga1.i586

  soprano-plugin-redland-2.6.0-0.1.mga1.i586
  xulrunner-7.0.1-0.1.mga1.i586
are now orphaned, if you wish to remove them, you can use "urpme --auto-orphans"

That's sorta strange, it says that all available updates are already installed.

Re: Mageia software packages update is somehow broken

Postby linuxero » Dec 6th, '11, 02:52

Sometimes I have this problem whether on Mageia machine or Mandriva 2011. the only solution that I found was to deselect the obnoxious package and go on with the update. For Thunderbird and Firefox, I remove the language updates and things go fine.

It seems that the URPMI Code has a sort of bug that selects unnecessary packages when some strange option is there. Just a guess, I never digged into the code itself..an outsider's observation..

Re: Mageia software packages update is somehow broken

Postby dude67 » Dec 6th, '11, 10:11

It seems that all the packages in my list of updates are "obnoxious" and the only more permanent solution that I have found was to fully uninstall the piece of sw that is reported falsely (e.g. Firefox) and reinstall it. But I would not want to go there I would always lose the application settings...

Isn't there any other way to fight this bug?

No, you won't lose application settings, as those are always saved in your /home.

But what i've still not understood is, you posted the output of urpmi --auto-select which said
that you're packages are all up-to-date. Now you say you get updates shown again?
Out of curiosity, would you please attach your /etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg?

I'm currently traveling so I'll post you the results when I get back home on Friday or Saturday.

Well, yes, it says that I still have all these packages to update and the problem remains. What I did here changed nothing.

OK, perhaps I don't lose the settings, but it still is a pain to uninstall all these packages just to get rid of that problem with updates. And then that will not ensure it will not happen again.

Everything looking good so far. You should try an
Code: Select all
urpmi --auto-update
as root which should update all available packages.
Cauldron is not for the faint of heart!
Caution: Hot, bubbling magic inside. May explode or cook your kittens!

Re: Mageia software packages update is somehow broken

Postby doktor5000 » Dec 10th, '11, 11:31

Now we're getting to the core of this weirdness - your RPM database is broken.
First, as root you should remove old, unneeded lock files:
Code: Select all
rm -f /var/lib/rpm/__db*

Then you should rebuild your RPM database:
Code: Select all
rpm -vv --rebuilddb
Cauldron is not for the faint of heart!
Caution: Hot, bubbling magic inside. May explode or cook your kittens!
