Mageia 1 -> 2 Alpha1

Is it possible to upgrade from Mageia 1 to Mageia 2 Alpha1? I have backups, but is it a risky operation, i.e. nothing works or there is a lot of tuning afterwards?

All you have to do is change your repository sources to Cauldron sources and then run
Code: Select all
urpmi --auto-update

But bear in mind that the upgrade is not guaranteed to work and Cauldron itself is unstable and could become broken.
Alpha1 and Cauldron are not intended to be used on production systems. They are purely for identifying and fixing bugs of which there will be many.

If you want to try out Alpha1/Cauldron without risking your system you could run it in a VirtualBox. That is what I do.

Thanks. I like surprises, so I will try it on my main system - after all, it's Mageia, not any random distro. :)

If the mirror is resyncing when you do the urpmi --auto-update it is possible for the upgrade to fail part way through.

If that happens just repeat the command and try again.
If you get any packages that simply will not install try uninstalling a key package and and reinstall it again.
Your desktop environment may become unstable during the upgrade, don't worry about it. It should all work again after a reboot.

Alpha 1 KDE seems pretty good to me, but I'm sure there are plenty of bugs in there. If you find one report it on bugzilla.

The upgrade went down the toilet so to speak. The boot froze - se attached picture. The upgrade itself went smooth with no errors.

I tried to boot the old kernel, I could not login to Gnome, KDE was not working very vell (missing menus in programs ++). Network did not work at all. Solution: I reinstalled Mageia 1, and I will wait for the next official release. I look at the bright side, now my bluetooth is working again :)

Well, I gave the upgrade another try, from a clean MG1 install, with some other instructions:
https://wiki.mageia.org/en/QA_process_f ... g_upgrades

Hurray, it worked, somewhat - now I am running Cooldron :)

The default 3.1.4 kernel freezes at boot... ..so I booted the old working kernel - 2.6.38.8
Maybe I have to compile my own kernel? Anyone?

You need to wait for next dracut/kernel update, the issue of the kernel update is being worked on.
By any chance, do you have a seperate partition for /usr?
Cauldron is not for the faint of heart!
Caution: Hot, bubbling magic inside. May explode or cook your kittens!

No, I have no separate /usr. I have a simple setup, 1 system partition for Mageia, and a separate encrypted /home partition.
