Hi!

First impressions of Gnome-iso on an Asus eepc 901:

live cd: starts and works
installation on hd: Everthing ok. After reboot a error-message "can't find public keys ...", but did'nt matter. Everthing works.

btw.: altough I like darker designs on my desktops, the bright white design looks very good on this little netbook ....

cheers,
:mrgreen:

I have downloaded the live iso from 4 different mirrors, burned to a cd and I have put it on a usb key with unetbootin.
I can't make the live cd or the usb key finish boot up. I have tried it on my compaq 10-100 mini netbook, and on my desktop (hp, P4). I come as far as to the boot screen. and then no further

Do not use unetbootin!
The ISOs are already made to be written on USB media, so use "dd" as root:
Code: Select all
dd if=<your_iso_file> of=/dev/sdx

where "sdx" is your usb device.

And don't forget to check the md5 checksum after download.

Mageia1 Beta2 KDE LiveCD run on a self built Desktop and a Toshiba Satellite A50 Laptop.
2 Issues from a first look:

1) Native resolution of display is not detected correctly by X:

- Desktop: Graphic Card is Intel 810 and later, Xorg driver is Intel, flat panel was set up as 1024x768, but native is 1680x1050
- Toshiba Satellite A50 Laptop: Graphic Card is Intel 810 and later, Xorg driver is Intel, flat panel was set up as 1024x768, but native is 1280x768

The correct resolution can be set up in MCC but it then suggests that a reboot is needed, which for running as a LiveCD is inappropriate, however a logout/login does set up the correct resolution.

2) Some issues getting a connection on the Desktop wired Ethernet after manually setting up with static IP address information. It took a few "Connect" attempts (and maybe a logout/login, not sure what cured it) before the connection was made successfully. Same Desktop with Mageia1 Cauldron installed on HD never has any connection problems.

Other than these issues it's looking good, laptop Wireless with ‎Centrino Advanced-N 6200‎, using WPA2, was detected and set up with no issues.

Thanks :D . Using dd solved my problems.
This is the first time I have actually used Mageia. Works fine on my netbook.

Tried the KDE Live CD. Cannot use my Mobile Broadband Sierra Wireless 890 AirCard as setup keeps asking for a non-existent PIN number. Don't have this problem in Mandriva 2011 Beta 2.

My Intel 6205 WiFi adapter seems to connect intermittently for now.

Same thing happens when I installed the final DVD to my hard drive. Can't get past the PIN request.
Works fine with Fedora 15 Gnome.

The only way I've been able to get my mobile broadband dongle to work in mdv/mga is by using Network Manager instead of the mdv/mga tools. (Fedora uses Network Manager.) You may need to use the MCC - Network Centre to activate the option to allow Network Manager to manage the connection. (There's an edit to a config file that you can do directly, but I forget what it is. :( )

Thanks Jim for the info. I'll take a look into using Network Manager.

I installed network manager, but I do not understand the supplemental installation instructions.

* Option 1, edit /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-xxx
{What is xxx? I have ifconf-lo, ifcfg-eth0, and ifcfg-wlan0 IIRC. There is no ifcfg-ppp0}
* Option 2, simply enable network manager to manage your connections in MCC
{Simply? Where in MCC do I do this?}

What I wrote above is from memory. I am having other issues atm where I can't open anything after logging in.

Here is the exact text of the supplemental installation instructions for networkmanager and knetworkmanager that I saved in a text file during installation (I copied this to a USB key and booted Fedora 15 to post this since I can no longer connect to a network in Mageia). Does anyone understand exactly what I am supposed to do?

networkmanager
This package includes BETA version of ifcfg-mdv system settings plugin, which adds support for Mandriva-specific interface configuration to NetworkManager.
By default this plugin will NOT try to manage interfaces, configured using Mageia Control Center, to avoid conflicts with standard tools. To enable interface to be managed by NetworkManager it is REQUIRED to set the following in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-XXX:
ONBOOT=no NM_CONTROLLED=yes
You can also simply set " Allow interface to be controlled by Network Manager" using Mageia Control Center.
You can find the current code in GIT repository at git://git.mandriva.com/projects/networkmanager.git in branch mdv.

knetworkmanager
The monolithic client is not built anymore by upstream. You need to use now the plasma applet.
Regards,

I am finding currently that the installation of knetworkmanager and networkmanager is causing a conflict with network center and more or less crashing my system. If I have all network devices disabled, I can use Mageia. If I try to open Network Center to make a connection I can no longer open other programs.

Re: Live CDs available for tests

Postby rezgaras » Jun 17th, '11, 16:32

I have downloaded the Live CD and started on my home PC and laptop. Here are the results.

Home PC (Celeron Dual Core E3300, 4GB RAM, Sapphire HD4350, 250GB SATA HD WD Caviar)

First display image correct, graphical display. Boot process breaks down. Long list of warnings and errors, probably interface compatibility issues (SATA? DVD?) Toggle between graphics and text screen extremely slow.

Laptop (IBM ThinkPad T42)

Correct startup, most functions work. Wifi OK from beginning!!!

Installation to HD from Live CD:

Installation to existing Linux partitions (/; /boot; /home)

Installation working, but deleted everything from existing /home partition, although only / partition was enabled for formatting!
When adding new user no "/home/user" directory will be created, although requested. Not possible to log in as new user
because there is no home directory.

These are major flaws, IMO. Mandriva installations did similar things (the first one, deleting existing subdirectories from /home)
many years ago, not recently! Please correct this!

Thanks.

I did several installations from live cd as well as from dvd and I can't reproduce this.
The contents of my /home was never touched.

I think I figured out what to edit in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-xxx. Basically all the files that start with ifcfg.

Option 2 above never was available because I never got past the PIN screen when setting up my 3G/GPRS modem (I found Option 2 when trying to set it up as an Analog (ppp0) modem instead). I found the file to edit: /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf using Google: viewtopic.php?f=15&t=208 and edited that, but it didn't help.

Installing and using networkmanager just breaks my X Server.

I only post this to let others know what I have found to date regarding my questions above that were never answered.
