[SOLVED] Possible to upgrade from RC to Final Release?

Postby linuxnovice » Apr 26th, '13, 13:40

Hi,

I've been experimenting with the Mageia 3 Beta 4 on a new machine and it looks pretty good. Now I want to set up this machine with Mageia permanently and migrate all my Mandriva app data etc. over. Actually I want to do it as soon as possible.

So if I install the Mageia 3 RC and get everything set up nicely, can I then do some kind of upgrade when the final release comes out, without the need for getting another 4GB ISO and reinstalling everything again from scratch? If it's possible, is such an approach advisable, or is it always best to do a clean install when going from pre-release to final release?

Thanks for any tips. The only thing I can offer in return is to report RC bugs in the short time remaining, or at least confirm that the RC works on my hardware :)

BTW: I hope this is the right forum... though it's about pre-release installers, it's also about my lack of understanding of Linux/Mageia basics.

There are usually only a few bug fix and security updates between RC and final. If you are applying updates as they become available, you will already have the RC++. When the final release is available you should only need to remove all of your software media and add the release media.

(You can if you prefer do a fresh install of RC and then apply updates and change to the release repo's when they become available.)

Yes you can move to the released version of mga3 quite easily.

At the moment your online sources are set to cauldron. When Mga3 is officially released all you have to do is
Code: Select all
urpmi --auto-update
to update your system to the latest cauldron version which at that time will be identical to the released mga3. Then
Code: Select all
urpmi.removemedia -a
urpmi.addmedia --distrib --mirrorlist
which will remove your existing cauldron sources and add mga3 sources

Finally go into Mageia Control Centre>Software>ConfigureMediaSources and enable Non-Free and Tainted sources and Update repositories (if desired)

Thank you both for the prompt and helpful reply!

I will try a fresh install from an RC ISO for the experience of it. After that I will use the updates to get to final release.

Great news! Thanks again.
