Problem with XPS file

Postby Max » Oct 27th, '11, 17:45

I have some .xps files that I got from my college that Okular cannot open.
They explained to us that we need a Windows Live ID and an internet connection in order to view this file.
I'm guessing that that is why Okular cannot open the file.
So, what do I do?

Tell your colleague (or do you really mean college like in school?) to please send you
some documents that don't need an internet connections or proprietary software to view,
like most PDF or Ghostscript files.

XPS stands for XML Paper Specification, developed by Microsoft.
Check http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows ... e/gg463373
There you can also find examples.

Downloaded sample documents from microsoft website. Installed Okular, needed to execute command
Code: Select all
kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental

in order to get Okular to open xps files. It said something like 'no plugins' rubbish before.

Downloaded and installed libgxps from Gnome website http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/sources/libgxps/0.1/, but my version of Evince still could not open xps. I would probably need to install newer version of Evince to get it to work, but don't want to start messing with Evince. Perhaps if all else fails, you may want to try downloading a newer version of Evince http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/sources/evince/

Failing that, you may want to try
http://www.xps2pdf.org/
it worked better than Okular did.

Is it possible that your files are DRM encumbered? Apparently Okular can't deal with DRM. Would it be possible to get a hold of one of your xps files Max?

My files are DRM encumbered. That's the problem, and I'm going to deal with it at the source.

EDIT
I am satisfied with his reasons for DRMing his files.
So the way I see it I have two options:
1. I could get a Microsoft XPS viewer to work with WINE.
2. I could somehow remove the DRM. Which is of questionable legality and probably very difficult. But a quick perusal of the file in GHex shows that it is mostly gibberish (non-human-readable) with some type of header, and an XrML file at the end. So in theory it should be possible, but due to the questionable legality and difficulty of the task I will stick with option 1.
