[SOLVED] Mageia 2/Mageia 3b3: Xorg "no screens found"

So. The problem here is that LVDS1 is not being detected and used by X11. Boot detects it properly, which is why the splash screen works. My default output is instead going to VGA1. I don't know enough about X11 to reconfigure it to look for and use LVDS1... help? :D

Did more research on it and fixed my issue this is the cause of it pulled from Fedora forum

"I installed earlier this month Fedora 18 w/ the 3.6.10-4 (x86_64) kernel which works flawlessly. Upgrading to the 3.7.4-204 kernel though ruined the whole thing : after the usual

"Loading initial ramdisk"

and other niceties, I'm stuck with a black screen and must do a hard reboot.

This is also the case with the 3.7.6-201 kernel, which I installed trying to resolve this issue : https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=799564

Anybody faced a similar issue? I tried searching on Bugzilla and on this forum and haven't found anything"

A moderator replied
Add acpi_backlight=vendor to your kernel commandline. This might solve this issue for a while.
There has been a bunch of changes for 3.9 kernel in acpi, so I thought i would wait for 3.9 kernel series and file a bug report then"

I tested this and it worked my login screen is now bright and I can see booting into Mageia now

mmm, I suppose I can try that too. I had thought that was only once the screen was detected though.

Hot damn! That did it. Thanks lorenzo! All those other things, and such a simple command I never would have guessed at made it work. I'm now enjoying my new laptop.

Of course, now I need to compile and instally Bumblebee... ugh. I'm hoping the Mandriva source RPM will be easy to compile up for Mageia. I hate not having RPMs for my software, even if I have to make my own (I run my own private repo for my stuff... speaking of which I need to recompile for Mageia 3 which I installed on the new laptop already), since it is much more convenient :D

Thanks to everyone who helped.

I've had to resort to using the VESA driver in order to get my old video card to work. It used to work in MGA2 with the free ATI driver, but now it doesn't work anymore giving me the "No screens found" error as well.

Did you try the backlight fix? If that didn't work then you're probably out of luck because MGA3 removed a lot of old hardware support. Still, knowing exactly which video card would be a good start, and probably should start your own thread as well since mine is solved and if the solution doesn't work for you then you have a different problem.

I have no backlight as this is a desktop computer. My card is an ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon x600 PCI Express (RV370). It looks like I'm out of luck unless I attempt to use the legacy proprietary ATI driver v9.3.

Only partly correct, ATI removed a lot of driver support.

Yeah, I should have said "MGA3 is using newer drivers that have removed a lot of old hardware support". Poor choice of wording on my part. I had noticed this on the Wiki though.

Still, for his problem he should probably start a new thread, yeah?

Would probably be better, yes.
