Mageia 5 Beta 3 is pretty smooth so far

Postby trollboy » Mar 27th, '15, 11:49

I downloaded and installed the Mageia 5 Beta 3 iso a few days ago and I must say it's been pretty smooth so far. I have encountered only one bit of strangeness:

  • Fairly regular empty notifications titled "Msec"

Coming from Debian, I don't know if this is a bug or something I haven't learned about yet. I also have a couple of questions:

  • At boot, it identifies itself as cauldron which I believe is the development branch. If I keep up with the updates, will it stabilise as Mageia 5 at release or will I need to re-install?
  • Does anyone know how to get rid of that cashew thing?

Cheers

Hi trollboy, awkward name, but anyway:
concerning the msec-notifications see:
http://doc.mageia.org/mcc/4/en/content/msecgui.html

Furthermore, feel free introducing yourself. ;)

No need to reinstall, but there's only a small window when the stable Mageia 5 repositories will be frozen and branched of, at that time
you will need to remove all your repositories, then you will have the normal Mageia 5.
Or otherwise you will directly update to mga6 as soon as Cauldron is boiling again.

You're talking about KDE, right? See https://userbase.kde.org/Plasma/FAQ/4.4 ... hews.22.3F
and especially https://userbase.kde.org/Plasma/FAQ/4.4 ... ght_cashew.

In the past there was a plasmoid called "I HATE the cashew" which was used to hide the cashew.
Nowadays there only seems this: https://github.com/benoit-monin/Py-Cashew and this: http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/St ... ent=108460
Maybe you can also try this: http://flexible.xapient.net/?p=996 or that: http://forums.solydxk.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=4147

As a general hint and golden rule: Please only one problem per thread ;)

I knew about the widgets which never seem to work for me but http://forums.solydxk.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=4147 worked like a charm. Thank you.

As far as the repositories go, I haven't added any just checked the non-free and backports items in the list and unchecked the 32 bit ones. I am unclear what will need to be changed??

Cheers. That's a good read but I was actually confused by the empty notification popup. I'm not sure if that would be expected behaviour?

There's no use in backports as they are empty. You should keep the 32bit ones enabled. You also should enable tainted release and tainted updates.

Hi

You are correct, not expected behaviour.

Seems to have been fixed in the latest round of updates, so an update for you soon should correct it.

note: this sort of thing can happen in beta.

Surely KDE will not fix it as it goes against their principle to not offer a way to disable the cashew.

Not likely. It has been reported as a bug many times and always marked as "won't fix" At the risk of living up to my user name, I do wonder what the developer is compensating for by having his "little cashew" on display for everyone...

To be frank, I don't get all the fuzz about the cashew. Usually I always have some window in front of it, like a browser, file manager, email client, terminal or some fullscreen game.
What do you do with your boxes that you care about a few pixels in one of the corners that are displayed on the wallpaper? Seriously, get a life.
