Stuck at booting up

Postby aco » Oct 9th, '14, 21:34

Hello,

After the last update, when I rebooted my laptop it is stuck at "initrd /boot/initrd.img". Any help getting passed this is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The boot menu should offer the older kernels. Try one of those instead of the default "Boot Mageia", which, if you are using Mageia 4, is probably 3.14.18. Try, for example, 3.12.25 instead. (You can hit the spacebar to stop the timer, so that you will have time to examine the available options.)

When I try another, for example, desktop 3.12.25-2.mga, it acts likk it is going to boot. I get a dracut Warning:filesystem. Then it says "Generating /run/initramfs/rdsosreport.txt" and says Dropping to debug shell. Looking up through some the warnings, I get An error occurred during the file system check and Dropping you to a shell; the system will try to mount the filesystem, when you leave the shell.

One last thing, I did notice an error that said Error reading block 5767209 (Attempt tp read block from filesystem resulted in short read) while getting next inode from scan.

I have to go to work for a 12 hour shift, so I won't be able to reply back until tomorrow.

Thanks again.

From a short look, it seems either your /boot or / filesystems need an fsck.
In the emergency shell, you may want to try
Code: Select all
journalctl -xb
to see what failed (seems mounting/checking of filesystems)

I'm not able to run the command journalctl -xb. It replied command not found.

Ok, so I inserted the install disk and went to Rescue System and was able to run journalctl -xb. Honestly I don'y really know what I'm looking for in the messages or what they mean. I did see a failed to execute /sbin/initqueue and failed at step exec spawning /bin/plymouth. Perhaps I should just reinstall at this point.

It's pretty useless when you run it from the rescue system, as that doesn't reflect your normal system boot.

From rereading your first posts, seems the initrd images are broken. Can you try any older kernel before 3.12.25? Did you try all the kernels that are available?

Oh....I've tried all the kernels and get the same result: I get dropped to a shell and won't boot.

Ok, so you need to boot your system from any live media, chroot to your Mageia installation and at least recreate your initrd images.

This is explained in those threads:
