Setting up Samba - round 2 [Solved]

Postby turboscrew » Oct 8th, '14, 12:05

To be on the safe side, I did reinstall Mageia, but didn't accept any updates (yet).
Code: Select all
Linux JAAMAGEIA 3.12.21-desktop-2.mga4 #1 SMP Thu Jun 5 21:33:44 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

The installer looked different (much more settings available), so maybe this time...

Is there a wiki-page or something about how to set up samba shares without need for passwords or anything so
that anyone that has access to my LAN has access to the Samba shares.
Can it be done using the draksambashare (via MCC) or should I do the smb.conf editing manually?

Tried with draksambashare:
Printers share mofification didn't work (as expected), but neither did sharing of
/media/win_d

Code: Select all
[root@JAAMAGEIA samba]# smbtree
Enter jaa's password:
WORKGROUP
        \\KOOLAP
        \\JAASMB
MYGROUP
        \\SABAYON                       Samba Server
                \\SABAYON\IPC$                  IPC Service (Samba Server)

Also, where did that 'MYGROUP' come from?

The \\KOOLAP is a share from another (Windows-)machine.

Would I get killed by other Mageia-users if I tried SWAT?

Swat is available in the samba-swat package, but you may prefer to try webmin. Check the descriptions of the two packages:
Code: Select all
urpmq -i samba-swat
urpmq -i webmin

I believe that there are other Mageia users who use webmin, and possibly swat. Draksambashare does not necessarily meet everyone's needs.

That webmin is really fascinating!

But back to Samba: I put some debugs and smbtree shows:

Any ideas what's wrong?

Also, when I first tried setting up samba with draksambashare via MCC, it wanted to install samba (from the DVD).
How did it do it? Both MCC "install and remove software" and 'rpm -q samba' indicate that samba is not installed.
Did it install it as a normal package or as "make; make install"?
I would like to check the version of the samba I have.

It would have installed the newest available rpm from the active sources defined in /etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg

There is no package named 'samba'
Code: Select all
$ rpm -qa | grep samba
samba-client-3.6.24-1.1.mga4
samba-server-3.6.24-1.1.mga4
samba-doc-3.6.24-1.1.mga4
samba-common-3.6.24-1.1.mga4

Not absolutely sure though, but New Zeland seems to be common thing.

Hey, something started working:

Code: Select all
[root@JAAMAGEIA samba]# smbtree
WARNING: The "null passwords" option is deprecated
added interface enp2s0 ip=fe80::922b:34ff:fe9f:3e81%enp2s0 bcast=fe80::ffff:ffff:ffff:ffff%enp2s0 netmask=ffff:ffff:ffff:ffff::
added interface enp2s0 ip=192.168.1.33 bcast=192.168.1.255 netmask=255.255.255.0
Enter jaa's password:
Got a positive name query response from 192.168.1.58 ( 192.168.1.58 )

WORKGROUP
        \\KOOLAP
Got a positive name query response from 127.0.0.1 ( 192.168.1.58 )
        \\JAASMB
Got a positive name query response from 127.0.0.1 ( 192.168.1.33 )
                \\JAASMB\print$
\\JAASMB\pdf-gen                PDF Generator (only valid users)
                \\JAASMB\NewVolume              NewVolume
                \\JAASMB\IPC$                   IPC Service (JAAMAGEIA)

I can even access the NewVolune via "network", but not from a windows machine.
Anyway, progress! :)

More progress: the problem seemed to be the firewall.
I cleared both Shoreline and Shorewall, and smbtree found all the shares, and I could access the shares from a Windows machine too.
